إِنَّindeed غَربَthe cutting edge of الدَهرِtime مَصقولُpolished
وَغِرارَand the blade of الجَدِّgood fortune مَسلولُunsheathed
Indeed, time's cutting edge is polished,
The eve of time is polished bright,
and fortune's blade is unsheathed.
And lisping jest is glibly dight.
وَرِداءَand the robe of الفَجرِdawn مُنسَحِبٌtrailing
وَنِطاقَand the girdle of اللَيلِnight مَسدولُhanging down
And dawn's robe trails along,
Morn's skirt the horizon quitting,
and night's girdle hangs down.
Night's zone from waist is slipping quite.
وَحَواشيand the fringes of الجَوِّthe sky ناصِلَةٌlosing their color
وَالدُجىand darkness بِالصُبحِby dawn مَطلولُslain unavenged
And the sky's fringes lose their color,
The skyey welkin's hems are seaming,
and darkness is slain unavenged by dawn.
Dawn's gloom with morning glow takes flight.
وَثَناياand the front teeth of اليَومِthe day يُضحِكُهاmakes them smile
مِنfrom قُدومِthe coming of العيدِEid تَقبيلُkissing
And the day's front teeth are set smiling
The day-shine little laughter stirs,
by kisses from the coming of Eid.
That comes with Festival's delight.
شَهِدَتhave borne witness فيناamong us مَخائِلُهُits auspicious signs
أَنَّthat هَذاthis الصَومَfast مَقبولُaccepted
Its auspicious signs have borne witness among us
His Mihrabs witness gave that here
that this fast has been accepted.
This Fast was undertaken right.
فَأَطِعso obey حُكمَthe command of السُرورِjoy وَإِنand even if
زُخرِفَتare embellished فيهِwithin it الأَضاليلُfalsehoods
So obey joy's command, even if
Obey the feast of joy and though
falsehoods are embellished within it.
Seems thee the world gone wild its plight.
وَتَعَلَّلand seek diversion بِالمُدامِwith wine لَهُfor its sake
إِنَّماonly الدُنياthe world تَعاليلُdiversions
And find diversion in wine for its sake;
Take thou the goblets' blamed glee for
the world is nothing but diversions.
Naught else but false and vain the Wight.
