If she knew what a noble youth I am,

she of the dark lips and cool, pearly teeth,

my threatener would not have fulfilled his threat of separation,

though I was blameless, and my promiser would have kept faith.

Like a shaken branch, yet he

    acts like a swaying fool.

You deliberately made my heart lose its way in you; and now

vengeance is due against the deliberate wrongdoer.

So is there anyone to seek what you have lost,

and anyone to find what you have squandered?

by the gaze of that young gazelle who binds them.

He let us escape, then turned his gaze back,

with a gazelle's backward glance toward the hunter.

The libertine was not fair in his glance

when he showed us a worshipper's chastity.

Pride in love is abasement before it,

and dwindling love turns toward increase.

A man is envied for his pleasures,

and love is savored without an envier.

O sweet-mouthed one, quench the burning ache

with a draught of your cool saliva.

I see a pool whose water is cold:

is there anyone to come to that water?

Who will bring it to me—molten honey

    flowing between frozen hailstones?

I am the son of one who had no forebear

who was not noble and generous.

And in the line of his fathers there was none

but men of long reach and forearm.

He has milked Time, yield after yield,

and set the pursuer after the fugitive.

Ours are the tall mountains, raised high,

from which the climber's foot slips.

Ours are the lean-bellied steeds that seize

the lead over foes by a greater distance.

Ours are the spears and bright swords, obedient

in striking, but defying the hand that would sheath them.

Ours are the thick-necked lions in their thickets,

    some roused to ferocity, and some lying in wait;

some lions whose lives have grown long,

and some young in years, already lionlike.

O you who fault me in ignorance,

    beware my lurking speckled serpent.

I send warnings ahead; mine is an onslaught

that drives sleep away from the sleeper,

like a passing flash of lightning

    that silences the thunderer's roar.

If you have not tested me as a striker,

then endure what comes to you from my forearm.

And take from my palm a gaping wound,

wide as a robe's slit, grieving those who visit.

Many a joy has lost its bloom

through a sting from the envier's scorpion.

I am he who gives of my newly gained wealth

just as I give of my inherited wealth.

My flint will not yield to the carver who assails it,

ever, nor my branch to the lopper.

I strive for a people seated in the heights—

how many strive toward one who sits!

I am he who sweeps through it in a charge

that scatters the camel herd away from its defender.

I am he who brings its shoulders underfoot,

as long as a spear rings in a defiant warrior's hands.

I am he who sets its horizons ablaze,

as though it were a fire-kindler's roaring blaze.

I am he who makes its champions swallow

blows like the stamping of a camel coming to water.

I am not fit for the heights if there is not

from my offspring what there was from my father.

And may horses never carry me if I do not tread

the throne of this mighty, noble man.

    أَولا فَقَد يَكذِبُني رائِدي

    If I attain it, it is just as I desired;

if not, my scout may mislead me.

And the end is death; why should I ponder

whether it has become my driver or my leader?
