If death would grant me redress,

my reproach would last long beyond today.

Indeed, never have I reproached it

but it has stilled my reproach with my own guilt.

Patience, my dear brother, for it

takes its course, even if it strikes mountains.

Make it easier on yourself, for it may

be that what is hard is no hardship to you.

Rise, for it has not been laid upon

one frail of spine or a humpless camel.

You would have been the healer for such a sorrow,

if fate could be warded off with medicine.

And though death's archer has shot

at a target and shaken a flock other than mine,

yet he has indeed struck with his arrow the

two targets—my eye and my heart.
