أَقولُI say وَقَدand already جازَpassed الرِفاقُthe companions بِذيthrough Dhu النَقاal-Naqa
وَدونَand ahead of المَطاياthe mounts مُربَخٌMurbakh وَزَرودُand Zarud
I say, as the companions have passed through Dhu al-Naqa,
with Murbakh and Zarud ahead of the mounts:
أَتَطلُبُdo you seek فيin قَلبيmy heart العِراقَIraq مِنَfrom الحِمىthe sanctuary
لِيَهنَكَmay it please you مِنas a مَرمىًgoal عَلَيكَfor you بَعيدُfar away
From the sanctuary, do you seek Iraq within my heart?
May you rejoice in a goal so far beyond your reach!
وَإِنَّand indeed حَديثَthe talk النَفسِof the soul بِالشَيءِof something دونَهُbetween you and it
رِمالُthe sands النَقاof the dunes مِنfrom عالِجٍʿAlij لَشَديدُis indeed hard
And surely, to think of something, when between you and it
lie the dune-sands of ʿAlij, is hard indeed.
تَرىdo you think اليَومَtoday فيin بَغدادَBaghdad أَنِديَةَthe gatherings الهَوىof love
لَهاthey have مُبدِىءٌone who begins مِنfrom بَعدِناafter us وَمُعيدُand one who repeats
Do you think love’s gatherings in Baghdad today
have, since we left, someone to begin them and someone to renew them?
فَمِنso some واصِفٍdescribing شَوقاًlonging وَمَنand some مُشتَكٍcomplaining of حَشاًa heart
رَمَتهُstruck it المَراميthe missiles أَعيُنٌeyes وَخُدودُand cheeks
Some describe longing; others lament a heart
struck by missiles—eyes and cheeks.
تَلَفَّتَhe looked back حَتّىuntil لَمnot يَبِنbe visible مِنfrom بِلادِكُمyour lands
دُخانٌsmoke وَلاnor مِنfrom نارِهِنَّtheir fire وُقودُa blaze
He kept looking back until nothing showed from your lands—
neither smoke nor any glow from their fires.
وَرِنَّand indeed (apparently وَإِنَّ) التِفاتَthe turning back القَلبِof the heart مِنfrom بَعدِafter طَرفِهِhis gaze
طَولَthroughout اللَياليthe nights نَحوَكُمtoward you لَيَزيدُsurely increases
And surely the heart’s turning back, after his eyes’ glance,
toward you, throughout the nights, grows ever stronger.
وَلَمّاand when تَدانىdrew near البَينُseparation قالَsaid لِيَto me الهَوىpassion
رُوَيداًgently وَقالَand said القَلبُthe heart أَينَwhere تُريدُdo you wish to go
And when separation drew near, passion said to me:
‘Gently!’ And the heart said, ‘Where are you bound?’
أَتَطمَعُdo you hope أَنto تَسلوforget your love عَلىamid البُعدِdistance وَالنَوىand separation
وَأَنتَwhile you عَلىwith قُربِthe nearness of المَزارِthe meeting-place عَميدُare love-stricken
Do you hope to forget amid distance and separation,
when even near the place of meeting you are love-stricken?
وَلَوand if قالَsaid ليto me الغادونَthose setting out ماwhat أَنتَyou مُشتَهٍdesiring
غَداةَon the morning جَزَعناwe crossed الرَملَthe sand قُلتُI said أَعودُI return
And had those setting out asked me, ‘What do you desire?’
the morning we crossed the sand, I would have said, ‘To return.’
أَأَصبِرُcan I endure وَالوَعساءُand the sandy waste بَينيbetween me وَبَينَكُمand between you
وَأَعلامُand the hills of خَبتٍKhabt إِنَّنيindeed I am لَجَليدُtruly hardy
Can I endure, with the sandy waste between me and you,
and Khabt’s hills? I must be hardy indeed!
