أُحِبُّكِI love you ماas long as أَقامَremained standing مِنىًMina وَجَمعٌand Jamʿ

وَماand as long as أَرسىstood firm بِمَكَّةَin Mecca أَخشَباهاits two Akhshab mountains
I love you as long as Mina and Jamʿ endure,
and as long as Mecca’s two Akhshab mountains stand firm;
وَماand as long as رَفَعَhastened الحَجِجُthe pilgrims إِلىtoward المُصَلّىthe prayer ground

and as long as pilgrims hasten to the prayer ground,
driving their camels onward despite their sore feet;

and as long as they slaughter at Mina’s Khayf and cast down
upon their chins the camels whose humps are marked for sacrifice.
نَظَرتُكِI looked at you نَظرَةًa glance بِالخَيفِat the Khayf كانَتit was

I glanced at you at the Khayf—a glance that was
a cleansing for my eye—no, a mote within it.
وَلَمand not يَكُthere was غَيرُanything but مَوقِفِناour standing together فَطارَتthen flew away

We had scarcely stood together before
each tribe of us was swept away toward its own destination.
فَواهاًso, how wonderful! كَيفَhow تَجمَعُناthey bring us together اللَياليthe nights
وَآهاًand alas! مِنfor تَفَرُّقِناour parting وَآهاand alas!

Oh, how the nights bring us together!
And alas for our parting—alas!
فَأُقسِمُso I swear بِالوُقوفِby the standing عَلىupon أَلالٍAlāl

وَمَنand whoever شَهِدَattended الجِمارَthe ritual stoning sites وَمَنand whoever رَماهاpelted them
So I swear by the standing upon Alāl,
and those who attend the Jamarāt and those who stone them,
وَأَركانِand the corners of العَتيقِthe Ancient House وَبانِيَيهاand its two builders

and the Ancient House’s corners and its two builders,
and Zamzam, the Station, and whoever serves its water:

you are surely my very soul; and if you are not
that, then you are its desire.
نَظَرتُI saw بِبَطنِin the valley of مَكَّةَMecca أُمَّthe mother of خِشفٍa fawn

I saw in Mecca’s valley the mother of a fawn,
bleating softly as she searched for her young.
وَأَعجَبَنيand pleased me مَلامِحُfeatures مِنكِof you فيهاin her
فَقُلتُso I said أَخاO brother of القَرينَةِthe companion أَمor تُراهاdo you see her
And I was charmed by the features of yours she bore,
so I said, ‘Companion, could it be her you see?’
فَلَولاbut were it not أَنَّنيthat I am رَجُلٌa man حَرامٌin pilgrimage consecration
ضَمَمتُI would have clasped قُرونَهاher horns وَلَثَمتُand kissed فاهاher mouth
Had I not been a man in pilgrimage consecration,
I would have clasped her horns and kissed her mouth.
