I donned battle before the robe of dust,

And clashed with the blade before its edge.

And lions who, when they sensed death,

Saw their life beyond that watchword.

Long of cheek, short of grudges,

Their blades quenched, their foals thirsty.

And seekers of pasture in the enemy's lands,

In every blazing fray of fierce heat,

With brown spears straightened for thrusting,

And sleek horses marked for raiding.

And a day we sealed with death,

Once the seal guarding honor had been broken.

The enemies' hearts are hunted that day

By the breasts of spears, thirsty and ravenous.

    When dust conceals their tracks,

They tear open hidden hearts, laying every blood-feud bare.

Their hearts, amid the trailing hems of death,

Stumble from the blows of the spears' tips.

And their souls cry aloud of death,

While the brown spears whisper with them.

And they had come to drink at the breasts of spears,

Just as they departed at the breasts of blades.

We clothed our spears in garments of blood,

While within them we were bare of shame.

    لا يَرفَعُ العَذلُ مُرخى إِزاري

    Indeed, I once trailed the mantle of unruliness;

Reproach could not raise my waistcloth's trailing hem.

So I became, before my cheek-down grew,

    Yielding, patient with the bridle.

Ah, many an ardent lover of high glory,

A child of riding-beasts, a suckling of journeys,

Far-reaching in honors, close to spearheads,

A friend to generous favors, an enemy to gold.

A youth whose judgment is not dragged through dust

By youthful dalliance's blades in the hands of wine.

The collar of darkness is torn by pale camels,

And with horses he tears the breast of day.

    When bounty's lifeblood ebbs, mourning-clad

Are his hands in generosity's flowing lifeblood.

Whenever they graze on the heights of his generosity,

    Lean wishes become like fawns.

And how often hopes are moistened by his bounty,

As his brown spears are moistened with dark, flowing blood.

And those that once plunged in pursuit of hope

Have found firm repose through his generosity.

As your heart found rest, O son of al-Husayn,

From its longing—and the eyes of glory too—

At the birth of a radiant girl, to whom you gave

The crescents' emergence after moonless nights.

    Her charms raided beauty,

So beauty's charms lie captive with her.

And no wonder that you see one like her,

While your firestick sparks with the nobility of your stock.

They scattered upon her the black cores of hearts,

And joy lay among the scattered offerings.

And had time been fair, we would not have been content

With anything but the hearts of the pearly stars.

May God grant you joy in her for as long as

The breasts of spears trill in Nizar's heights.

And may He revive through her, for you, the dead of glory,

And destroy through her every flaw and disgrace.

And the turbans of a people were humbled through her,

Just as she is an honor to the veil.

Let this praise suffice you for glory,

Even if the water of my pride ebbs in praise.

It visits you amid the hearts of enemies,

And cuts them apart in its unbroken visits.

Through my praise, the hand of your glory has come

To have its wrists roam within a bracelet.
