    وَإِذا القَنوعُ أَطاعَني لَم أَرحَلِ

    I am for the riding-camels whenever I come upon a dwelling;

and when contentment obeys me, I do not depart.

I have never sought the wealthy miser for a need,

ever, and I am content with the generous man who has nothing.

I see one who appeals indirectly to a base man as though he were

dim-sighted, cutting somewhere other than the joint.

Many an ally's unruliness is not curbed

by prolonged reproach or the labors of reprovers.

He oversteps against you while you mend his breach,

like a sword cutting into the polisher's fingers.

I weep over a life that death tugs at,

as a well-rope is drawn from the deepest well.

How likely that a rope lowered into deep water

will be raised by the fingers of the one who lowered it.

I never exulted in a meeting, nor felt

unease at the parting of a traveler setting out.

I turn my reins away from wrestling with passion,

and turn aside from mention of the amorous gazelle.

I visit the outlying frontier posts, and before them

lies grievous thrusting with slender lance-shafts.

Shall I partake of the sweetness of union when before it lie

bitter refusal and the pride of a coy beloved?

I would never gulp down a honeyed drop

at desire's bidding, its vessel made of colocynth.

O noble lady of the two clans, suit yourself, and lift

whatever you wish of the fringes of your hanging veil.

Far too distant for glances to reach you! Between us stand

rocky heights like the snout of an advancing cloud.

Others' abodes are welcoming to guests,

and others offer spacious lodging in hardship.

And when the Commander of the Faithful gives refuge, for me, to

my hope, I lodge with the generous benefactor.

Through the auspicious al-Ta'i, my request was granted,

and I rose until my stronghold could not be rivaled.

A mighty camel-stallion: when calamities assail his resting-ground,

he bloodies their withers with a massive fang.

He ventures deep in pursuit of the enemy, knowing

that a coward, when marching by night, will not venture far.

When men divide a spoil among themselves,

he apportions the inheritance to them with the blade's edge.

Steadfast against calamities' clamor, as though

they came rattling dry waterskins at Yadhbul.

Al-Rashid's judgment and al-Mansur's awe, in

    al-Amin's beauty and al-Mutawakkil's grace.

Your radiant forefathers, who, when they declared their lineage,

carried off every distinction and every act of generosity.

They passed away as generations passed away, knowing

that a later one would tell of an earlier one.

A lineage reaching you, whose elders drew between them

a long, unspliced tether from al-Abbas.

Here is the caliphate, its reins in your hands,

while others blunder in the depths of pitch-black night.

You secured it above all mankind; only

an undistracted frontrunner shakes off the dust-cloud.

With robust horses speeding beneath the spears,

at a pace that sends loping wolves fleeing.

White-blazed and white-stockinged, when battle is joined,

    they uncover a white-blazed, white-stockinged day.

They were urged on—what girth around them did not tighten

with sweat, and what bridle did not jingle?

Darkness shed its hide, and there shone

the sides of that radiant, lightning-flashing cloud.

A prophetic radiance rose in your face,

like the sun, filling the beholder's eye.

And if, amid peace with foes, you are rebuffed by

a land, you give its soil to battle-dust.

And horsemen never sought refuge in a mountain pass

without your coming upon them with a massive host.

The docile riding-camels sped away with us, as though

measuring the cloak of every drought-stricken plain.

The mirage raises shapes before us

and stretches the necks of the upright hilltops.

From every hillock whose neck rose high,

as though it were the fore-neck of an approaching stallion.

And a night-camp resounding with wild beasts, as though

its sounds struck the ears from the gurgling of a cauldron.

The wilderness wore down our flanks and worked swiftly

into the bone, feeding on the fat of mature camels.

To you an adventurer flung the riding-camels,

swept along by the forelegs of mounts that led astray.

They came to you exhausted, devouring the midday heat,

with shade between their padded feet and the pebbles.

And lightly laden, bereft of every saddlebag

once full, and every heavy waterskin.

Upon the saddles are twisted headcloths,

winding around hair there left uncombed.

Your ropes were clasped; then my hopes swore

that my fingertips would be wound round no rope but yours.

A hope knelt in your house's courtyard, settling there,

as though at the verge of a verdant valley.

And, all-enveloping, it moistens your hands, as though

the mane of a low-hanging raincloud had covered it.

I look to you for a momentous affair; indeed,

the exalted are sought for great, difficult matters.

I seek, from the soaring reach of your might, a summit

unassailable, stealing all eyes from on high.

How many a coward sought it from you, but it dodged him,

a broad-flanked mare whose mouth plays with the bit.

It bloodies the hearts of the envious, then wheels about

and repels the assaults of descending calamities.

Time grew cramped, and my movements within it were confined,

like water gathering itself in a channel.

This al-Husayn traces himself to your eminence,

as an honor, and declares his glory in the assembly.

You gave him a promise whose fulfillment rests upon you,

and he will attain what he seeks if he does not hurry.

So be generous in deed after word; indeed,

the first autumn rain is praised only through the rain that follows.

Perhaps we may draw by bucket, if we cannot scoop,

the water of hopes, and drink again, if not given a first draught.

How many a stand, in whose shelter you spoke privately to him,

while speech betrayed the eloquent orator.

You steadied his footing there, while behind him lay

a panic that would shake the hearts of stones.

Ah, continue! How many a favor you clothed him in,

trailing amply like the fringes of a velvet cloak.

He rose and soared like an eagle to the heights,

while his enemy plummeted like a falcon.

He wishes he had been a bygone generation,

or a drop of seed carried off by a destroying sickness.

And a man with an upturned nose fell upon his brow

before you, neither accepted nor welcomed.

When he saw you, his steps grew short

in panic, and he halted at the first portico.

God bless you! You have stirred a benefaction

at the hands of one with paternal and maternal uncles rich in benefactions.

You honored us above mankind; indeed,

kindness to kin is the bond of the generous man.

You drew us to the heights as with a halter-rope,

and when a proud-striding man ascends, he does not descend.

You are indeed worthier of leadership and guidance,

and stauncher in defending the offspring of the sent Prophet.

The last drops of your bounty's milk-flow are ransomed

with brimming udders from the milk-flow of others.

Without the cloud of your bounty, a rider would

complain of burning thirst even after kneeling at a watering-place.

Most worthy of praise is one who sends a favor

joining bonds of kinship that had not been joined.

My lord, who will let me see you, and how can I

attend your house with the enemy kept apart?

Look upon me with a little of your gaze, a glance

that lifts my sight and makes my tongue eloquent.

Now, with you enriching me, I am not satisfied

with a contented man's contentment or a dignified man's restraint.

The Commander of the Faithful's bounty deserves

that we not slumber over hope left neglected.

With a mouth that, when speech lifts its curtain,

announces his bounty even without being asked.

And a hand that, when you ask its passing raincloud to rain,

pours over you crystal-clear, easy-flowing water.

It effaces the records of calamities, as

the passing north wind clears away rain-laden clouds.

    لَو شاءَ طاعَنَ بِالسِماكِ الأَعزَلِ

    A strengthened arm needs no spear for protection;

if he wished, he would joust with al-Simak the Unarmed.

This caliph never closes his eyes to guidance,

even if the devout man's night of prayer falls asleep.

When I called for his aid against a calamity,

he drove off Time, which had knelt upon my breast.

I followed praise with praise for him, as though

I had emptied all my arrows into a vital spot.

With every rhyme that, when I released it,

turned the reins of the hastening rider.

Through his wafts of bounty and his protection I won

the greatest blessing and the safest refuge.
