And how much does my heart's abode lament being shackled

From settled life, and after sleep, sleeplessness.
And after sleep, rousing is difficult

Honor is more fitting for the one to whom you bid adieu

His heart inclined toward the sublime, steadfast

So rejoice in it, and in days graced with it;
So delight in it and in days adorned by it
For the honored man is fortunate despite all afflictions.
The dear one is surely fortunate despite tribulations
قَليلُa little مَدحِكَpraise of you فيin شِعريmy verse يُزَيِّنُهُadorns it
حَتّىuntil كَأَنَّas though مَقاليmy speech فيكَabout you تَغريدُbirdsong
A little praise of you adorns my verse,
Little is my praise of you in my verse beautifying it
Until my words of you seem birdsong.
Until my words about you seem like warbling
كَمhow often خَوَّضَdelved الناسُpeople فيinto قَوليmy words وَقائِلِهِand their speaker

How often have people plunged into talk of my words and their speaker,
How much have people waded into my words and their sayer
And how high hyperbole and fine craftsmanship have carried me!
And how much have I been inundated by chanting and declaiming
أُذَمُّI am blamed مِنfor أَجلِthe sake of أَشعاريmy poems فَواعَجَباso how strange!

I am blamed for my poems—how strange!
I am blamed because of my poems, how wondrous!
Are grape clusters blamed when wine commits a wrong?
Grapes are blamed if the wine turns intoxicant

I have not complained, for pride holds me back,
I have not complained that honor keeps me seated
And you are my sword, present on the day of terror.
While you are my sword on the day of clamor that is witnessed
