He punishes me, though he is the guilty one.

Your neighbor has indeed been humbled, O Jundub!

    وَمَن ذا يُضامُ فَلا يَغضَبُ

    And he wonders at my anger, in ignorance;

and who is wronged without growing angry?

    فَعَمَّ نُزادُ وَلا مَشرَبُ

    We are driven from your watering place through meanness;

then from what are we driven, when there is no drinking place?

    فَلِم أَعوزَ الأَهلُ وَالمَرحَبُ

    Granted, your hopeful petitioner found no bounty;

then why were greeting and welcome lacking?

If my camels are kept waiting for their grazing,

then is the grass-rich land of any use?

And can a smiling exterior benefit me,

when behind it an inner self scowls?

The caravan has indeed halted at your door,

at a watering place whose water is hard to reach.

And I was not, among those watching for lightning,

the first deceived by a rainless flash.

Mere tails that flung their dung about—

yet even a bushy tail can be cut off.

It has indeed grieved me that generosity should die

with the noble, leaving no successor.

Do you not marvel at a man so disgraced

that a mangy creature scratches itself against his honor?

And a bare-flanked mount clamored at me,

hamstrung, and said, 'Will you not ride?'

And I shall sing of your reputations

a song of evil that gives no joy:

    rhymes whetted for slashing flanks,

as knives are whetted—their draught is all-consuming.

And it is folly enough on your part that I

am in earnest, while you think I am playing.

And they said, 'Draw their milk by asking!'

Indeed, dry-uddered camels cannot be milked.

And how, when they have neither sought praise

from panegyrists nor offered them encouragement?

God has indeed widened what they narrowed,

and God has made good what they left unfulfilled.
