God willed only to grieve your foes through you,
God willed that enemies would harm you
and make your survival an exception to death.
And that survival would be an exception to decay

Never would this age strip off
Never in this life was there a day
the baldric of a sword whose like it had never girded on.
When the sword of glory was drawn by anyone like you

After this stumble may you meet glory anew
He attained eminence and renewed his glory, graceful and carefree.
And regain honor after adversity

You vanished like the full moon whose appearance is delayed;
You disappeared like the hidden full moon
night's full moon vanishes only to be seen again.
But the moon of night only hides to shine again

The setting of brilliant stars guarantees their rising;
The setting of stars ensures their rising
so, O Farqad, you remain a Farqad through the night!
So sleep awhile, with sleep that lasts the night

may glory's unity be protected from dispersal!
May the cloak of glory never be torn

You are safe for us; God is too compassionate toward eminence
You yielded to us, and God is kinder to the sublime
to let you vanish from us, and too merciful toward bounty.
Than to abandon us, and more merciful to the dew

Tell the foes: smell humiliation with a cropped nose,
So say to the enemies: Taste disgrace, hot and bitter
and bite your short hands with a toothless mouth.
And bite the hands of shortcoming in rage

Awaken to this from the stupor of error, and seek
Wake from the sleep of folly and seek
a rein toward what you hate, and a halter.
Reins toward what you hate, and guideposts

You thought kingship's healed bones had been broken again,
You thought royal might was humbled
and that glory's grazing herds had become strays.
And the steeds of glory ran wild

Today they have a shepherd whose herd is never frightened;
Today it has a herder whose steeds
he has made their road easy and paved it.
Made the path smooth and paved

When enemies covet them, he shelters them,
When enemies covet it he defends it
and pastures them among tall spears and leads them to water.
Letting it graze safely on the heights

And Qiwām al-Dīn's sea has indeed surged
By his hand the pillars of faith stand firm
with a threat that made the rebels rise and sit down.
He stops rebels and makes them sit

Beware of him: even as you behold the sea lying still,
Be calm as you look on the still sea
you may come to see its depths heaving and foaming.
Until you see it surge with white-capped waves

Did it embolden you that the sword fulfilled all wishes
Did you think the sword fulfilled its purpose
and left no blood-debt with Time, and so was sheathed?
And no vengeance remained in time for it to be sheathed?

I guarantee that if a bared blade remains
for some wayward day, that the sword will be drawn.
From the days, it will bare itself again

Must the cleaving blade be drawn before it is feared?
Should not the bandit cower unless opposed?
Must the quivering spear be leveled before it is guarded against?
Should not the honey-hunter beware unless threatened?

Let the nights and heights rejoice that they
is a gift of recovery that glory has counted as a birth.
Are the cradle where glory was born anew

At a time when fear sent hearts flying,
When fear took wing in hearts
kingship's flanks were made to flutter and tremble from it.
The birds of kingship took fright and fluttered

Hopes became scattered dust
promising themselves pasture and a watering-place from your favors.
Seeking your blessings, water and pasture

If life could garb you now in a magic amulet
it would clothe you today in knotted amulets.
It would, for the day has turned the charm

An edifice in which glory set up its pillar,
A building where glory established its pillars
fixing it beneath the tall spears and making it firm.
And secured its base beneath the heights

As always, when it wounds you
the call distracting him from the delight of camel-song,
The call to prayer distracts you from joy's music

And your ardour cools like that of pilgrims
the pricking of blade-points urging them toward their end.
Whose zeal is dampened by the swords' blows

Like the days at Dārazīn's two bends and Arbiq,
As in the days of Hanwi and Darzin
battlefields where spear-thrusting extinguished and kindled.
When the piercing blades flashed

I keep bright swords drawn there; were it to flash,
I could go on about their white blades that would shine
lightning's gleam there would be taken for an Indian-forged blade.
If their lightning did not blind the beholder

Rain is obscured there, so long has flowed
And their rains are hidden by the downpour
over them the gore of thrust and stroke, unceasingly.
Of stabbing and blows that fell continuously

You were driven off there as quarry is driven with spears;
You were paralyzed by them like game before the hunter
whoever turned away disavowed you, and whoever guided went astray.
Those who fled were disgraced and those who led astray

They left you nothing but empty gutted bodies
gushing, repelling the probes and the hand.
Carcasses tossing spears and hands

Leave the broad road of eminence to him who knows its way,
Leave the morsels of the sublime to the guided one
and clear the path where he has traversed lowland and highland,
And clear a rugged road where none trod

For the tallest of you, when the swords are unsheathed
dry-uddered, yet never lack a fresh replacement.
Are pegs that cannot be removed

I forbade you to approach a growling lion with cubs,
I warned you against one heedless of consequence
who guarded wild lote-trees and boxthorns along al-Sayʾ's sides,
Straying, lost in the lands of the wicked

a massive thicket-lion amid stagnant blood,
An ignorant beast mad with blood
as though a rose-red cloth lay upon both sides of his neck.
As if driving his victims on unceasingly

His roar parts the two great armies,
His roar parts the two hosts
as Najd's cloud groans and thunders.
Like lightning rending the clouds with thunder
يَجُرُّhe drags سَآبيَّstreaming sheets of الدِماءِblood وَراءَهُbehind him

مَجَرَّ الخَليعِ الشَرعَبيَّ المُعَضَّدا
He drags streaming sheets of blood behind him,
None speaks foolish words except the mute
as a libertine drags a patterned Shaʿrabī cloth.
With the like of these no rain softened the rocks
وَحَذَّرتُكُمand I warned you of مُغلَولِباًa surging sea ذاpossessing غُطامِطٍdeep rumblings

And I warned you of a swelling sea with deep rumblings,
The hopeful never found your horizon dark
when it overturns the fleet's boats and foams.
Nor did the arm ofdew freeze in your clinched fist
لَهُit has زَجَلٌa loud clamor كَالفَحلِlike a camel-stallion يَقرَعُcovering شَولَهُhis dry she-camels

أَلَظَّ بِقَرقارِ الهَديرِ وَرَدَّدا
Its clamor is like a camel-stallion covering his dry she-camels,
The enemies heard only the speechless
persisting in the rumble of his bellow and repeating it.
And the envious saw only the blind

May the misguided one be struck dumb, and may no speaker utter
While you live, loss does not visit us
such words, so long as rain wets hard rock.
Nor blessing diminish with less resolve
وَلاand may not وَجَدَfind الراجونَthose who hope أُفقَكَyour horizon مُظلِماًdark

وَزَندُ النَدى يَوماً بِكَفِّكَ مُصلِدا
May those who hope never find your horizon dark,
You remain as your enduring words remain
or bounty's firestick ever sparkless in your palm.
For when enduring words endure, they surpass endurance
وَلاand may not سَمِعَhear الأَعداءُthe foes إِلّاexcept بِأَصلَمٍwith a cropped ear

وَلا نَظَرَ الحُسّادُ إِلّا بِأَرمَدا
May enemies hear only with a cropped ear,
The hoped-for is never far that you will not reach it
and may the envious see only with an inflamed eye.
And if today it eludes, tomorrow you will grasp it

So while you live, wishes shall not bear scant fruit
You always weary of life

Else men would be immortal

May what you hope for never be beyond your reach;
if it eludes you today, you will reach it tomorrow.

فَلو خُلِّدَ الأَقوامُ كُنتَ المُخَلَّدا
May you be given long life until you utterly weary of living;
for if peoples were made immortal, you would be the immortal one.
