اللَهُGod يَعلَمُknows مَيليmy turning away عَنfrom جَنابِكُمُyour presence
وَلَوeven if تَناهَيتَyou went to the utmost ليtoward me فيin البِرِّkindness وَاللَطَفِand gentleness
God knows my aversion to your presence,
even if you went to the utmost in kindness and gentleness toward me.
فَكَيفَso how بيwith me وَعَلىand upon عَينَيكَyour two eyes تَرجَمَةٌan expression
مِنَof الحُقودِgrudges وَعِنوانٌand a sign مِنَof الشَنَفِloathing
How then must I feel, when your eyes bear an expression
of grudges and a sign of loathing?
أُطيفُI hover around مِنكَof yours بِوَجهٍby a face غَيرِnot مُلتَفِتٍturning
إِلىtoward المُناجيone confiding privately وَعِطفٍand a side غَيرِnot مُنعَطِفِbending
I hover by a face of yours that will not turn
toward one confiding, and a side that will not bend.
فَماso not أَغُبُّكَI visit you intermittently مِنbecause of عُذرٍan excuse وَلاnor شَغَلٍbusiness
وَلاnor أَزورُكَI visit you مِنout of وَجدٍyearning وَلاnor شَغَفِpassion
My absences from you are not due to excuse or business,
nor do I visit you out of yearning or passion.
قَدindeed كانَthere was قَبلَكَbefore you مَرجُوٌّhoped for فَواضِلُهُhis favors
Before you there was one whose favors were hoped for,
ascending to glory, ever climbing toward honor.
تَمُرُّpasses نَفحَةُa breath نُعماهُhis bounty إِذاwhen خَطَرَتit stirred
مِنَfrom القَبولِthe east wind بِجَنبيalong both sides of رَوضَةٍa meadow أُنُفِungrazed
A breath of his bounty wafts, whenever it stirs
from the east wind, along both sides of an untouched meadow.
إِنif تَستَعِضكَtakes you as a replacement المَعاليlofty honors بَعدَafter ذاكَthat one فَقَدthen indeed
أَفحَشنَthey have acted disgracefully فيin بَدَلٍa replacement مِنهُfor him وَفيand in خَلَفِa successor
If lofty honors take you as a replacement after him, then they
have made a disgraceful choice of his replacement and successor.
يَهَشُّhe welcomes gladly لِلمَرءِtoward a man تَفريهِrend him أَظافِرُهُhis nails
كَماjust as تَهَشُّrejoice سِباعُpredators الطَيرِbirds لِلجِيَفِover carcasses
He welcomes a man gladly, his nails rending him,
as birds of prey rejoice over carrion.
إِذاif نَجاhe escapes مِنfrom يَدَيهِhis two hands غَيرَnot مُنعَقِرٍwounded
أَفنىhe wears away أَنامِلَهُhis fingertips عَضّاًby biting مِنَout of الأَسَفِregret
If a man escapes his hands unwounded,
he gnaws his fingertips to nothing in regret.
يَظُنُّhe thinks أَنِّيَthat I وَصّالٌone who firmly joins بِهِto him سَبَبيmy bond
إِنّيindeed I إِذاًthen مِنfrom أَميرِCommander of المُؤمِنينَthe Faithful نَفيa disowned descendant
He thinks I would bind my ties to him;
then I would be disowned by the Commander of the Faithful.
إِذاif لَبِستُI put on جَمالاًsplendor أَنتَyou مُلبِسُهُwho clothes me in it
فَإِنَّنيthen indeed I قَدhave طَرَحتُcast off المَجدَglory عَنfrom كَتِفيmy shoulder
If I don a splendor with which you clothe me,
then I have cast glory off my shoulder.
لاmay not قَدَّسَsanctify اللَهُGod نَفساًa soul مِنكَof yours جامِعَةًcombining
كَيدَcunning of البِغالِthe mules إِلىwith ذيthe bearer of الجُلَّةِdung الشَرَفِthe aged camel
May God never sanctify a soul of yours that combines
the cunning of mules with that of an aged, dung-bearing camel.
وَلاand may not سَقىwater الغَيثُthe rain داراًa house أَنتَyou ساكِنُهاits inhabitant
إِلّاexcept بِأَغبَرَwith a dust-gray storm نارِيِّfiery الذُرىthe crests قَصِفِshattering
And may rain never water a house where you dwell,
except with a dust-gray storm, fiery-crested and shattering.
