Does a grave in al-Junaynah know that we
Does the grave in al-Junaynah know that we
have stayed beside it, mourning generosity and lofty deeds?
Stopped by it to lament the dew and loftiness?
حَطَطناwe dismounted فَحَيَّيناthen we saluted مَساعيهِhis achievements أَنَّهاthat they
عِظامُmighty المَساعيachievements لاnot العِظامَthe bones البَوالِياdecaying
We dismounted and saluted his achievements, for they
We alighted and greeted its efforts - that they
are mighty achievements, not decaying bones.
Are the bones of efforts, not the bones of calamities.
مَرَرناwe passed بِهِby it فَاِستَشرَفَتناthen looked out toward us رُسومُهُits traces
كَماas اِستَشرَفَlooked out toward الرَوضُthe meadow الظِباءَthe gazelles الجَوازِياpassing
We passed by it, and its traces looked out toward us,
As we passed by it, its features greeted us
as a meadow looks out toward passing gazelles.
As the meadow greeted the passing does.
وَماand not لاحَappeared ذاكَthat التُربُearth حَتّىuntil تَحَلَّبَتtrickled forth

And no sooner did that earth appear than there trickled forth
And that soil did not glisten until
trickles of tears that filled the inner corners of our eyes.
Rivulets of tears filled the watering places.
نَزَلناwe descended إِلَيهِto it عَنfrom ظُهورِthe backs of جِيادِناour steeds

نُكَفكِفُwe wipe away بِالأَيديwith hands الدُموعَthe tears الجَوارِياflowing
We dismounted beside it from the backs of our steeds,
We descended by the backs of our steeds
wiping the flowing tears away with our hands.
To wipe away with our hands the flowing tears.
وَلَمّاand when تَجاهَشناwe burst into البُكاءَweeping وَلَمand not نُطِقwe were able

And when we burst into weeping and could not
And when we struggled with weeping and could not
break free from grief, we excused the weeping women.
Refrain from passion, the criers excused us.
أَقولُI say لِرَكبٍto a band of riders رائِحينَdeparting تَعَرَّجواturn aside

I say to departing riders: Turn aside;
I say to a caravan passing by, turn aside -
I will show you there a withered branch of glory.
I will show you through it a withering branch of glory.
أَلِمّواstop by عَليهِbeside him عاقِرينَslaughtering offerings فَإِنَّناfor we

إِذاwhen لَمnot نَجِدwe find عَقراًa beast to slaughter عَقَرناwe slaughter القَوافِياthe rhymes
Stop beside him, slaughtering offerings; for we,
Tether your she-camels around it, for if
when we find no beast to slaughter, slaughter rhymes.
We do not find a tethering place, we will tether the rhymes.
وَحُطّواand set down بِهِbeside him رَحلَthe saddle of المَكارِمِnoble virtues وَالعُلىand eminence
وَكُبّواand overturn الجِفانَthe great bowls عِندَهُbeside him وَالمقارِياand guest-serving dishes
Set down beside him the saddle of noble virtues and eminence,
And pitch your belongings of virtues and heights by it
and overturn beside him the great bowls and the dishes for guests.
And shed your tears and eulogies around it.
وَلَوand if أَنصَفواthey were just شَقّواthey would rend عَلَيهِover him ضَمائِراًhearts

Were they just, they would rend their hearts for him
If they were just, they would split their consciences for it
and sever necks with sword-edges, not forelocks.
And separate heads with hyenas, not their necks.
وَقَفناwe stood فَأَرخَصناthen we made cheap الدُموعَthe tears وَرُبَّماand sometimes

We stood and spent our tears cheaply, though sometimes
We stood, so we let flow our tears, and perhaps
they are dear at passion's bidding.
They will be substitutions for the pangs of love.
أَلاlo! أَيُّهاO القَبرُgrave الَّذيwhich ضَمَّenclosed لَحدُهُits burial niche

O grave, whose burial niche enclosed
O grave, whose enclosure contains
a slender blade keen against the heads of calamities!
A staff striking the brow of catastrophes!

Is Ibn Hilal, since he died, still as we knew him—
Since Hilal's son passed away, is there
a crescent still bright on the horizons where it rises?
A crescent by the rising of stars still remaining?
وَتِلكَand those البَنانُfingertips المورِقاتُputting forth leaves مِنَfrom النَدىgenerosity's dew

And those fingertips, putting forth leaves from generosity's dew—
And those bright peaks of dew - are they
are they drained of water, or do they remain as they were?
Fountains or cisterns as they are?
فَإِنso if يَبلَdecays مِنfrom ذاكَthat اللِسانِtongue مَضاؤُهُits keenness
فَإِنَّthen indeed بِهِin him عُضواًa limb مِنَof المَجدِglory باقِياremaining
And if that tongue's keenness should decay,
For if the glow of that tongue still remains,
yet in him an enduring limb of glory remains.
Then through it a part of glory remains.

He who answered appeals, giving generously and defending,
It responds to calls, driving off and defending,
lies there crumbling, answering no appeals.
While there a dumb one who does not respond to calls.

I would not refuse a long stay at his grave,
I would not complain of the length of his stay in his grave
if, whenever I sought his aid, he would charge forth.
If when I call upon him he would answer.

You see radiant words, after his death,
You see, after his death, his eloquent words
fleeing whoever seeks them, far away.
Pour forth from whoever seeks them like blessings.

He stained the pens, and through them attained heights
He is the one who dyed pens through which he attained heights
beyond the reach of those who stained tall lances.
Beyond which aspirants to heights fall short.

He struck repeatedly with a tongue that, had it
A repeater of blows with a tongue which, had it
fought on a day of battle, would have blunted the Yemeni sword.
On a day of battle turned back the Yemeni phalanx.

Strong of sinew, he reached the heights in a leap,
Bitter in strength, he attained the heights leaping
while others reached the heights by crawling.
When others attained the heights creeping.

He departed; no valiant heart could defend him,
He went away - no grieving heart escorted him
a heart that, once resolved, never recoiled from its resolve;
When he decided, he did not turn back from resolve.

Neither those who supported him with palms from his side
in anguish, and those who made their collarbones his pillow.
Over anguished hearts, nor those who laid him on the bier.

Nor did he thrust against Death's breast with a palm
Nor did he, in the bosom of death, ward off with a palm
with which he would repel brown lances and keen blades.
With which to turn back the heat of midday and watering places.

The valley whose solace you were lies empty after you,
After you the valley which you had made intimate
and is now a valley beset by calamities.
Became desolate, with catastrophes laying it waste.

Grief's flock has come upon us at evening, grazing
A group of passions settled upon us, grazing
on our innermost hearts through its days and through the nights.
Upon our hearts, its days and nights.
وَلولاكَand but for you كانَwas الصَبرُpatience مِنكَfrom you سَجِيَّةًan innate trait

But for you, I could not endure: patience was a trait you imparted,
If not for you, patience would have been your nature
a legacy we inherited from the forefathers of old.
An inheritance we inherited from the ancient ancestors.
رَضيتُI accepted بِحُكمِthe decree of الدَهرِTime فيكَconcerning you ضَرورَةًout of necessity

I accepted Time's decree concerning you out of necessity;
I accepted the decree of fate concerning you out of necessity,
and who ever becomes content with what brings sorrow?
For who is he that goes willingly to what displeases him?
وَطاوَعتُand I yielded to مَنwhoever رامَsought اِنتِزاعَكَwresting you مِنfrom يَديmy hand

I yielded to the one who sought to wrench you from my hand;
And I obeyed the one who wanted to snatch you from my hand,
had I found helpers, I would have been defiant.
Though had I found helpers, I would have become a rebel.
وَطَأمَنتُand I bowed low كيماso that يَعبُرَmight pass الخَطبُcalamity جانِبيmy side

I bowed low so that calamity might pass beside me,
I was resigned so that tribulation would pass by me,
but it flung itself upon my back and dragged my rein.
That I might throw off my burden and loose my bridle.
مَلَأتَyou filled بِمَحياكَwith your life البِلادَthe lands فَضائِلاًvirtues

With your life you filled the lands with virtues;
You filled the lands with your virtues in your life,
your resting place fills the lands with tidings of death.
And your resting place will fill the lands with blazing flames.
كَماas صَمَّdeafened عاليthe loftiness of ذِكرِكَyour renown الخَلقَcreation كُلَّهُall of it

كَذاكَlikewise أَقَمتَyou roused العالَمينَthe worlds نَواعِياmourners
As your lofty renown deafened all creation,
Just as the lofty mention of you silenced all humanity,
so you set all the worlds to mourning.
So you established in both worlds a flamer.
رَثَيتُكَI elegized you كَيso that أَسلوكَI forget you فَاِزدَدتُbut I grew in لَوعَةًanguish

I elegized you to forget you, but my anguish grew,
I have elegized you in order to console myself, yet I have increased in agony
for elegies cannot make good losses.
Because elegies do not close gashes.

And I know that weeping is of no benefit to you,
over you, yet I nourish hopes.
But still I entertain hopes and wishes.
