أَتَطمَعُDo you hope أَنthat أُلقيI hand over إِلَيكَto you مَقادَتيmy reins
أَتَطمَعُ أَن أُلقي إِلَيكَ مَقادَتي
وَليand I have مارِنٌa nose-tip ماnot مَرَّنَتهُhave tamed it الخَزائِمُthe nose-rings
وَلي مارِنٌ ما مَرَّنَتهُ الخَزائِمُ
Do you hope that I will hand my reins over to you,
when my nose-tip has never been tamed by nose-rings?
وَتُكثِرُand you multiply بِالأَمرِwith a matter العَظيمِgreat تَهَدُّديthreatening me
وَتُكثِرُ بِالأَمرِ العَظيمِ تَهَدُّدي
وَمِنِّيَand from me تَنفَضُّscatter الأُمورُthe matters العَظائِمُgreat
وَمِنِّيَ تَنفَضُّ الأُمورُ العَظائِمُ
And you keep threatening me with a great peril,
yet great perils scatter before me.
وَقَدand already عَجَمَtested by biting الأَقوامُthe peoples بَعدَكَafter you صَعدَتيmy spear-shaft
وَقَد عَجَمَ الأَقوامُ بَعدَكَ صَعدَتي
فَماyet not أَثَّرَتleft a mark فيهاon it النُيوبُthe fangs العَواجِمُgnawing
فَما أَثَّرَت فيها النُيوبُ العَواجِمُ
And peoples after you have tested my spear-shaft,
but the gnawing fangs have left no mark on it.
