Come to water, my steeds, and give notice of departure.

Soon you will graze the clan's land.

Lo, in my heart is a surge of longing for glory,

And amid the spears, one day, lies the cure for my burning thirst.

When I take night as impregnable armor,

How slight then is even time's gravest calamity!

I owe the blood of sacrificial camels if I do not rouse with them

Troop after troop that cleaves the earth,

To seize my due—or see their dust rise

From the plain, from a land offering the worst noonday rest.

I seek nothing but lofty honors, and seldom

Does my hope fail when spear-thrusting is my messenger.

I readily abandon lands when they prove inhospitable

To me; no man of valor is abased.

And I lend my arm to whoever wants it,

With a bright, polished sword, fierce in both its edges.

My resolves have aimed at glory, not the dwelling-place,

And honor, not graceful women, has made my wasting plain.

I offer passion a soul averse to passion,

And a heart that will not yield to love's oppression.

I withhold my affection from people, save its smallest share,

To be safe from a tyrant assailing me,

And set aside a hidden store of reason that I guard,

And ransom the greater part of myself from them with a little.

And I crush my secret within my ribs in fear—

Has the day not come to reveal what lies within me?

    إِذا شاءَ أَصغى الهَمَّ دونَ مَقيلي

    My boon companion in drinking sorrows is an Indian-forged sword;

When it wills, it turns sorrow away from my resting place.

I refuse to be abased while I hold in my hand

My reins, and my path has not been cut off.

Every blood-debt, when I take it upon myself,

Though it burdens other men, weighs nothing on me.

My path, marked by camel-hoofprints, betrays me

Unless the east wind sweeps its skirts along it.

How many a beloved has made me drink his parting,

While I misled my heart about him, never wearied!

Autumn rain had embroidered the space between him and me,

And kept pouring from dust-gray clouds.

Driving the soul away from what it seeks

Is harder toil than pursuing a victim.

My enemies nurse hopes each day, yet they dread

My harm; a mere part of me can match my peer in strife.

It delights my eyes to return an object of envy,

For the envious envy none but the noble.

Never has my hand clasped a traitor's hand,

Nor has my disposition been too narrow to house a guest.

A man's first baseness is baseness in his roots,

And his first betrayal is betrayal of a friend.

My censurer is one who makes weakness's back an easy mount,

But resolve's back is no docile beast.

A breeze from this world is sweet to one who breathes it,

But what burning thirst and fever follow it!

The nights turn toward a man as a shadow turns,

With blessings—yet their bounty is not abundant.

The days conspired against me until they struck me

With what I dreaded: an encounter with a miser.

    وَيا رُبَّ عارٍ دامَ غَيرَ غَسيلِ

    And afterward I must wash away the shame;

Yet, ah, how many a shame has lasted unwashed!

A man supposes his ascendancy will last,

But every ascent is followed by descent.

Should I place hope in the sword's point, then fear it,

And, to glory's displeasure, accept a censurer's words?

It was through blows that Ibn Musa won his desire

And took his place on the heights—what a place he took!

A youth who sent forth counsels with firmly twisted strands:

No counsel counts if its cord is loosely spun.

He learned from his fathers their leaps

Toward glory, from the heights of spears and blades.

It would not harm him if every tribe

Demanded his entry on the day of battle.

The enemies know he will not send them back

Except with choking groans and wailing.

When black calamity knocks upon his household,

And the neck of judgment has bent every way,

His is the resolve of one who twists it, sovereign in his judgment,

And the mind of a man who seeks no other minds' aid.

He trails his hem over passing stratagems,

And his greatest gifts come unasked.

How many a high-reaching tyrant among his foes

Has he made the nights abase, as none could abase!

He let security's reins run long, until he overshadowed him

With a dust-gray flood of spears and horses.

How often kinship groaned because of him while he was angry,

And he returned to kindness without delay!

When foes are far from his fierce assaults,

Let them not feel safe from one who reaches and overtakes.

I seem to see it, a seasoned she-camel, raiding them at dawn,

Its rear ranks divided in two, wearing no anklets,

Masculine in force, never striking a people

And breaking off except after bloodshed and a killing.

    Beware his scheming: his heart

Holds secrets fast and does not divulge them.

And a surging host whose steeds' forelegs interlace—

What a tumult of battle cries and neighing!

And sleek, lean steeds stretching against their reins,

Their neck-bases like the necks of ibex,

Lean from long galloping, as though they were

    Plant-tops drooping as they wilt.

They pressed onward into a raging battle where no mountain

Was high, nor the rugged hills able to bear its weight.

There they grazed on upraised spears as though,

On battle's morning, among tender shoots and tall herbage.

How often he plunged into the heart of darkness with young men

Who see night's rugged paths as level plains!

The spear-shafts reach out behind them,

Like lions with the sides of a thicket moving beside them.

Swords of proud refusal in unyielding hands,

Each long blade in a tall man's right hand.

They plunge ahead with counsel before his armies,

Their bright edges still bright, without a notch.

If the raiding army gains spoils behind him,

Its spoils in war are nothing but pilferage.

God be with you! This feast-day sings an advance guard onward,

Like absent glory announcing its homecoming.

Even if our feast-day held nothing but its being

    A sign of prosperity—what a sign!

It jostled the other days only out of longing

To reach you with a day lovely to behold.

And stretched a sky from your loftiness, filled

With stars of good fortune that never set.

Take, then, what time bestows: good fortune and delight,

For many a season has arrived bestowing nothing.

May you endure as long as nights despoil; can any man

Demand a guarantor for something that has passed?

May you live on and annihilate your enemies, for that

Heals a hidden burning ache between the ribs.

What made it easier to send the enemy ahead with a choking pang

Was death's entry into my family and my tribe.

In my enemy, if death walks toward him, I find

Consolation when doom carries off a friend.

Yet no death has truly missed me

When it has treacherously snatched someone I love.

I have a purpose: that a poem should never cease

To murmur, some day, of my hopes and desires.

Words like strung pearls, not plundered,

And speech like a keen sword's forepart, never uttered before.

After this, I shall call for none to surpass it,

Nor for its like from anyone speaking briefly or at length.
