Can a lament and wailing bring back a dead man,

and can streams of tears soothe burning grief?

We prolong our anguish, though solace is fitting,

and display our weeping, though composure is becoming.

A man's youth is a night that confounds his paths,

and his gray hair a keen sword polished against him.

Youth's color before grayness does not endure,

nor is gray age's span after youth long.

The fading color of the hair in every tress

is a sign that continued life must change.

We hope to drink our fill of life, while death

drinks deep of men's lifespans and devours them.

Yet far from it! Power does not avail the mighty

so that he survives, nor does obscurity save the lowly.

We say our sides have a resting place in sleep,

but is there any resting place except the graves' depths?

Leave thoughts of loving life and prolonging it:

your worry, not your brief lifespan, grows long.

And do not hope to be given an abundance of life,

for every sojourn in time is brief.

Whoever looks upon the world with an eye for truth

knows that a shadow not yet gone will vanish.

Caravans are escorted away, never to return,

and homes and ruined traces are mourned after them.

Why do wet nurses rear children in hope?

Why do husbands seclude themselves with women?

Are we not plunging toward our appointed ends, with behind us

a driver from death, unceasing and swift?

One lies dying among his kin; or a young man

lies slain, writhing in blood among the spears.

If a man's reason does not aid his patience,

there is no path to noble resignation.

And if a wise man knows nothing of fate and time,

then men's minds are the most useless of things.

The nights' colors change, and there are effaced

by that change familiar blazes and white stockings.

    فَفي الأَجرِ مِن عُظمِ المُصابِ بَديلُ

    Take comfort, God's trustee, and renew your grief;

for reward offers recompense for the magnitude of loss.

These days are nothing but horsemen

pursuing us, with calamities for steeds.

And if a star has vanished from Hashim's crest,

it is no wonder: stars do vanish.

He has departed; the one who remains is dearer to high honor,

and better guided toward kindness when he gives.

    فَدَع كُلَّ نَفسٍ ما سِواكَ تَسيلُ

    Your survival alone is what we desire, and no other's;

so let every soul but yours flow away.

A young man's death is better for him than his life

if he dwells among the days in abasement.

Look back toward your illustrious forefathers: do you see

among them any survivor whom the snares have missed?

Has a man ever gained in life more than his allotted span?

Has the burning thirst of death's sickness ever been quenched?

Whoever dies, once he has embraced the earth, does not know

whether a friend wept for him or a friend forgot him.

So draw in the reins of grief, whether in seeking comfort

or in seeking to be called forbearing.

    أَلا إِنَّ أَعمارَ الأَنامِ شُكولُ

    For everyone departs, even if death does not hurry;

    indeed, mankind's lifespans are alike.

Grief has surges that oppress a man,

just as wine has laid men's heads low.

I would indeed have urged weeping from heartache,

if anguish could be washed away with tears.

But as things stand, no grief is dispelled by a tear,

so a man's patience in affliction is noble.

How many a laugher's tooth has mingled with the weepers,

and amid the exhausted camels' bellowing, a neigh!

I find that I do not yield to a calamity

whose tread upon me is ever heavy.

I turn a blind eye to fate as it assails me,

though my sight in affairs is not dim.

Patience makes light for me whatever is brought

by the nights' vicissitudes, while calamities descend.

I am not one to overlook what disgraces me,

nor do I turn from affection for my kin,

nor say what God knows to be false,

even if spears and blades pierce my skin.

But for the Commander of the Faithful, there would have raced

    with me through the wastes a swift she-camel, wild at the reins;

and I would have been tossed through every east and west

by an age grudging with hope, miserly.

But he has raised my station above my foes,

and taught my speech how to speak of him.

He has made his hands' bounty a familiar custom for me,

to which I turn with my hopes and incline.

They say, 'If only you placed your hopes in someone else among men!'

But is there anyone above him for petitioners to petition?

Whoever has the caliph's favor for his sword

meets the nights as they shrink back from him.

And whoever shoots with his arm extended far

has his arrow strike his targets and return.

A youth: in every encounter, high glory beholds

through him the spear blind and the keen sword abased.

He drives the tips of spears into every heart

where a hidden rancor against him ever dwells.

When he appears on the day of terror in a swimming steed's saddle,

troop after troop passes on warnings of him.

May you endure, Commander of the Faithful, for only

    your survival guarantees abiding might.

May the nights never seize an opening against you,

nor any ghoul destroy the heart within your breast.

May you be granted what no ruler was ever granted in kingship,

for you are excellence, while mankind is mere surplus.
