Away with all I have befriended but the straightened spear,

and away with every thirst-quenching draught except blood.

If darkness falls and I carry no resolve through it,

an hour of my night is like a full year.

    إِذا قَلَّ جُرمٌ مالَ بي في التَجَرُّمِ

    So keen am I on thrusting that I go out at dawn with my supple spear;

when offenses are few, it inclines me toward offending.

I am not one whose heart accepts food

while the spears have not learned whence my sustenance comes.

I shall advance, deeming nothing I encounter too great,

whether my path through terror widens or narrows.

For bygone time bereaved Labid of Arbad,

and before me Malik was mourned by Mutammim.

And many a resolve I entrust to lofty spears, and many a quest

I have hurled between the earth and the heights.

A true man is only one in whom, when you see him,

you see a wealthy soul in a pauper's robe.

He lingers little among family and wealth,

and often appears between valley and mountain pass.

Will my day dawn upon me while I have not plunged

into my enemies' blood with the straightened spear-shaft,

nor wearied the sword whose baldric is long

before the blades, as dust is hurled against dust?

The soul's only cure is a chipped blade,

readied for a day veiled in dust.

And many a kicking she-camel is mine, scattering gravel

with her downpour, from landmark to landmark.

If God does not aid my blade against the foes,

I am merely prey to the oppressor.

And if He saves my lifeblood from death's mouth,

I am saved; otherwise I am its first morsel.

I spend the night with a resolve in every land,

shaking the necks of the tightly girt mounts.

And mounts urged to a swift trot, as though

rehearsing the tireless exertion of al-Jadil and Shadqam.

You see each red-sided camel as though

a vein of crimson dye pulsed in the corners of her eyes.

With a hoof like a cleft-lipped hare's mouth, she grows headstrong,

over the shadow of a bearded, stone-flinging neck.

The lean youth in the saddle is like a feather

floating lightly above the breast of an earless male ostrich.

When she senses the herd's sound behind her,

she raises a noble muzzle and cheek.

She imagines a sand-born serpent in the slack of the rein,

biting at the place of the noseband.

They bore us into the night and joined it

to a radiant dawn, emblazoned, with gleaming breastplates.

Whoever makes his brave heart his guide

    finds no darkness truly dark.

I have been afflicted; my age afflicted me with a band

who plunge me into every unseen matter guessed at.

Broadcasters of a guarded secret—would that they

had spread it as plain cloth, not yet embroidered!

A little talk slips out, no great abundance,

and a tale's beginning returns from someone who completes it.

    وَتُغضِ عَلى ذُلٍّ وَمُت فيهِ تَعظُمِ

    An age of harm: live in it, and its people wound you;

overlook humiliation; die in it, and you grow great.

Yet I do not let passion overpower judgment,

nor tell longing, when it strays, 'Press on!'

    وَرُبَّ مَغيظٍ قاطِعٍ بِالتَوَهُّمِ

    Nor do I sever, through suspicion, what I have joined;

many an angry man severs ties through imagining.

Because I am accustomed to seriousness, I am sparing

with my lips: no one knows where my smile lies.

Separation from loved ones is sharper than death,

and severs bonds more keenly than a sharp sword's edge.

God bless you, valley whose breadth they settled upon,

and searched for 'arar blossoms and 'izlim.

At evening they rival lavender's wafting fragrance

with a scent sweeter and gentler than lavender's.

I struggle against my tears; then they win and flow.

Whoever sheds no tears for love does it wrong.

My soul never remembers you without being gathered

to my heart by the embrace of one wounded and suffering.

My two friends, tears cannot fend off from me

the consuming passion of love, like a blazing fire.

Am I anything but the possessor of a borrowed soul,

and a heart lent to burning grief and pain?

Whenever my steed carries me through her dwellings,

he ceaselessly demands my sighs with his neighing.

    وَأَدنو وَلا يُعزى دُنّوي بِمَأثَمِ

    I yearn, yet no suspicion is cast on my yearning;

I draw near, yet my nearness is not charged with sin.

The sight of a beauty holds no delight for me,

nor do I count winning her or nearness as spoils.

How long will beauties stir my longing, when between them

and me stands chastity like Mount Yalamlam?

I am indeed trustworthy in every private encounter,

faithful in desire, heart, eye, and mouth.

Another man, when offered an obscenity,

rushes toward it more fiercely than wolves toward blood.

Whoever makes the minister's favor his beloved

makes beauties jealous, maiden and formerly married alike.

Through it I pass the night calm at heart amid calamities

for which others pass the night with hearts torn apart.

Peerless in eminence, he consults none but himself

when a crisis arises or a day of loss draws near.

And a victor who governs his grudges with forbearance,

and drives away his foes' rancor through generosity.

    وَإِن طالَ نُطقُ القَومِ لَم يَتَجَهَّمِ

    When petitioners grow numerous, he does not draw back his hand;

though their speech grows long, he does not scowl.

He leads the necks of his wealth by halters to petitioners,

while other men's wealth is a breeding camel never nose-haltered.

His heart delights greatly after his generosity,

while another giver lets his hand fall in regret.

Swift: when the caller to spear-fighting summons him,

he goes forth thrusting while his foes still hesitate.

He never makes a move without rattling helmets with blade-edges,

and the spears' recoil runs over every wrist.

No spears are planted unless their butt-spikes provision

their spearheads with surplus forbidden blood.

And every morning, pale from a dust cloud,

is the skeins of a cloak striped with seasoned battles.

If generosity arises, they say, 'A downpour's surge!'

If terror arises, they say, 'A lion's charge!'

He raids the face of the deserts along every path,

dragging lofty spears and marked cavalry squadrons.

Bold in deed and daring, he keeps pressing

toward glory, mounting every great undertaking.

Yet he is of honor, glory, and eminence

more worthy and deserving than the sky is of stars.

    وَما اِنقادَ مَن قادَ العَوالي بِمَخطَمِ

    They came to him without his stretching out a hand to seek them;

one who leads lofty spears is not led by a noseband.

Even if those who envy his good fortune deny his glory,

they grudgingly acknowledge the merit of his precedence.

    وَليسَ يَضُرُّ الذَمُّ غَيرَ المُذَمَّمِ

    The envious men's lies do not harm the full moon;

    blame harms only the blameworthy.

And many a settled clan I have terrified with a mass

of horses that respect no pledge to a protected man,

when I besieged the darkness on my way to them

with a towering host dashing in ordered armor.

No day ever smiled without my meeting it

with a radiant face or a cloud-laden hand.

If a renegade meets you, he restrains his reins

and turns back the untrimmed talons of the spears.

And many a daring kinsman of spears,

slender-limbed, bare of both wings, split-lipped,

when brandished one day for raiding, you see it

more penetrating to souls than any keen spearhead.

It delights you in blunting swords and spears,

and pleases you in repelling a vast, mighty army.

It has saliva flowing as its master wills,

as poison runs between a speckled serpent's fangs.

O filler of every cloud on days of bounty,

and of every bridled steed on days of war,

rejoice in Mihrjan's arrival, for it

is ascribed to you through the days and claims kinship with you.

This festival visits only out of yearning

for you, with a heart aspiring in passion, lovesick.

It comes to learn generosity from you and to behold

its beauties in your smiling mouth.

There is no shame in a palm seeking help from the cup,

when carrying the cleaving sword has hurt it.

I watch you with a thief's eye, whose glance displeases you,

and tend you with a love that has not been blamed.

    وَرُبَّ لَحاظٍ نائِبٍ عَن تَكَلُّمِ

    My gaze reveals what lies between my ribs;

many a glance stands in place of speech.

And many a look begs words from my mouth,

charged with speaking for me in reply to the one addressed.

Even if you trick me out of my requests, I will not

obey those who censure and blame me over you.

The noblest man to hope in, the most honorable lord,

is a generous man who advances when summoned to generosity.

I seek to guard you from leaving thirsty a youth whose gaze was

bound to the singing lightning of the clouds.

One whom wealth beguiles is content with a cheerful face,

and one lacking water is content with dry ablution.

Know that my poetry about you endures, while others'

is swept away and tossed by the hands of nights.

With every glance, my gaze is bound to you by

the radiance of a full moon turbaned in lofty deeds.

    وَلا كُنتُ إِلّا لاحِقاً بِالمُقَطَّمِ

    But for you, my she-camel would not have recovered in Baghdad;

I would only have been bound for al-Muqattam.

The lands most worthy of dwelling in, of all this world,

are those where a free man gains whenever he alights.

I praised the Commander of the Faithful, and he is indeed

the noblest hope and the highest destination.

    وَلا مَرحَباً بِالمالِ إِن لَم أُكَرَّمِ

    He lavished honor on me before giving gifts;

no welcome to money if I am not honored.

Whenever I speak of someone who is not noble

in praise, I seem to chew the taste of colocynth.

My hope in the adornment of Hashim's faith

is indeed a blessing; he suffices me as a generous benefactor.
