وَلَمّاand when بَداit became clear ليto me أَنَّthat ماwhat كُنتُI had been أَرتَجيhoping for
مِنَfrom الأَمرِthe affair وَلّىturned away بَعدَماafter قُلتُI said أَقبَلاit had drawn near
And when it became clear to me that what I had hoped for
From that affair had turned away, after I said it had drawn near,
تَلَوَّمتُI hesitated بَينَbetween اللَومِblame وَالعُذرِand excuse ساعَةًfor a while
كَذيlike one at الوِردِa watering place يُرمىbeing pelted قَبلَbefore أَنto يَتَبَدَّلاchange places
I hesitated awhile between blame and excuse,
Like one at a watering place, pelted before he can turn elsewhere.
فَلَمّاthen when رَأَيتُI saw الحِلمَforbearance قَدhad طارَflown طَيرَةًa sudden flight
وَلَمand did not أَرَsee إِلّاexcept أَنto أَلومَblame وَأَعذُلاand reproach
Then, when I saw forbearance take sudden flight,
And saw no choice but to blame and reproach,
رَجَعتُI turned back أُوَلّيdirecting عاثِرَstumbling الجَدِّfortune لَومَهاthe blame for it
فَلاso may it not قامَstand بَينَamong العاثِرينَthose who stumble وَلاnor عَلاrise high
I turned and laid the blame for it on stumbling fortune—
So may it never stand among those who stumble, nor rise high!
أُلَعِّنُهُI curse it repeatedly مُستَثنِياًdrawing in مِنsome of عِنانِهِits rein
كَرَدِّكَas you return فيinto الغِمدِthe sheath الكَهامَthe blunt sword المُفَلَّلاnotched
I heap curses on it, drawing in its rein,
As you return a blunt, notched sword to its sheath.
وَأَعفَيتُand I exempted مِنfrom لَوميmy blame اِمرَأًa man ماnot وَجَدتُهُI found him
مُليماًblameworthy وَلاnor باباًa door عَنِagainst الجودِgenerosity مُقفَلاbarred
And I spared a man my blame, having found him neither
Blameworthy nor a door barred against generosity.
لِجَدّيfor my fortune إِذاًthen بِاللَومِof blame أَولىmore deserving مِنَthan الحَياthe rain
وَمَنand who ذاis it that يَلومُblames العارِضَthe raincloud المُتَهَلِّلاbeaming
My fortune, then, deserves blame more than the rain—
And who would blame a beaming raincloud?
