وماand never تَلَوَّمَheld back جِسميmy body عَنfrom لِقائِكُمُmeeting you
إِلّاexcept وَقَلبيand my heart إِلَيكُمtoward you شَيِّقٌyearning عَجِلُimpatient
And my body never held back from meeting you
My body does not blame me for longing to see you,
Without my heart yearning for you, impatient.
Yet my heart leaps eagerly towards you.
وَكَيفَand how يَقعُدُsits still مُشتاقٌone who longs يُحَرِّكُهُstirs him
إِلَيكُمُtoward you الحافِزانِthe two driving forces الشَوقُlonging وَالأَمَلُand hope
And how can one who longs sit still, when he is driven
How can a longing lover sit still
Toward you by the two driving forces—longing and hope?
When passion and hope spur him to you?
فَإِنso if نَهَضتُI rise فَماthen not ليfor me غَيرَكُمother than you وَطَرٌdesire
وَإِنand if قَعَدتُI sit فَماthen not ليfor me غَيرَكُمother than you شُغُلُpreoccupation
So if I rise, I have no desire but you;
If I get up, I have no other goal but you,
And if I sit, I have no preoccupation but you.
If I sit still, I have no other thought but you.
لَوif كانَthere were ليfor me بَدَلٌa substitute ماnot اِختَرتُI would choose غَيرَكُمُother than you
فَكَيفَso how ذاكَthat وَماand not ليfor me غَيرَكُمother than you بَدَلُa substitute
If I had a substitute, I would choose no one but you;
Had I any substitute, I'd not have chosen another,
So how could I choose another, when I have no substitute but you?
How could that be when I have no other but you?
وَكَمand how many تَعَرَّضَcame forward ليto me الأَقوامُpeople قَبلَكُمُbefore you
يَستَأذِنونَthey seek permission عَلىto enter قَلبيmy heart فَماbut not وَصَلواthey reached
And how many people approached me before you,
Many came to me before you,
Seeking leave to enter my heart, but never reaching it.
Asking leave into my heart, but none ever entered.
