An abiding sorrow that will not let up,
and a bygone life that will not return.

Abasement is nothing but the base man's deceit,
and a freeborn man is not deceived by abasement.

The pebbles cry beneath her padded hooves
in varied tones, and the soft white stones clamor.

I lay into her hide with all my strength,
while the riders move in a jolting amble.

when the barren land enfolds them.

I bring them, still bridled, to their fifth-day watering,
sipping what they once drank in deep draughts.

The wild beasts of the desert marvel at them:
they journey by night while the beasts' herds graze freely.

For him whose cares the earth cannot contain,
a bed may well be too narrow to hold him.

He who gives generously has renounced his wealth;
and he who is brave has divorced his own life.

Indeed, a young man's heart is a morsel of flesh:
it harms, yet it also brings benefit.
