Ah, had wine not wrestled with him—

the wine of longing—dignity would not have impelled him.

We stood, wringing water from our eyelids,

water that conquers the fire within our ribs.

For how often longing's drunken rapture sweeps away

a patience touched by its hangover.

May the clouds' pearls quench the thirst of dwellings,

for even visitation thirsts for them.

And may it tug drought's trailing skirts away from them—

the rain, with right hands of plenty.

On nights when remembrance wakes my longing,

and my solace sleeps but briefly.

Lo, time has decreed against us

calamities in which we find a lesson.

Whenever calamity's darkness leads us astray,

beacons shine through us for whoever wanders.

We turn from the rain though the air is water,

and touch the soil though the earth is fire.

We traveled by night through the deserts' heart, until

we left them, having become their innermost garment.

Alas for glory, beset by a people base!

Is there no freeborn man jealous for honor?

For their bravest, when they panic, is a coward,

and their cleverest, when they speak, an ass.

Your milch-camel yields milk to those farthest from you,

while I get from her only disgrace and flight.

Others have the light of your fire; for me,

its rising smoke and scorching heat.

And sleek steeds have donned garments of night,

lean, with hollows in their flanks,

bearing riders at whom darkness trembles,

so daylight veils it out of terror.

They loosen the weave of a garment of dust,

behind whose fringe the blades show through.

They veiled the air with dust clouds, until

the full moon seemed hidden by the dark of the moon.

And many a day when spearpoints were unleashed

upon lives, and all that must be guarded was ravaged,

    we embraced death's untouched maidens,

while to lives other than ours they were foster-mothers.

Dust had barred the way: no escape,

and the field had narrowed: no resting place.

We wheeled our steeds despite their sore hooves,

their bits and cheek-straps already bloodied.

Their hooves had stamped out cups,

and clotted blood supplied their wine.

Blows set pools flowing in the entrails,

whose water the thirsty spears sip.

The vultures pitched us a canopy of shade,

as foals sheltered at the flanks of lean steeds.

Heads are severed there by keen blades,

and round necks lies death's tightly twisted rope.

They plunge into helmets as silver,

and emerge as gold, stained with clotted blood.

With blows that scatter blade-edges, until

each rib holds an edge of theirs.

With every youth from whom disgrace slips away,

when pride sets his arms astir:

a keen sword no scabbard can enclose,

and a lion no visitor dares approach.

Deaths befriend the edge of his keen sword,

yet turn aside from his own life's spark.

He bares a wrist from the breast of a spear,

and returns with a heart for its bracelet.

And brown lances of al-Khatt stumble against necks,

so their stumbling draws them toward hearts.

How many a thrust into a broad breast

lets the breast-covering pass through to the heart!

Were it not overflowing with fresh blood,

dust would pass through it, so wide it is.

Death has crouched in every arrow,

with a place of flight in every breast.

When the sons of Qays choose combat with me,

I return, while death has its pick among them,

with a spear whose point grows keener in its gaze

whenever streaming blood spills from it.

Silent among the tips of lances,

yet it bellows as it pierces hearts.

When its spearpoints stream with death,

they have no resting place but a heart.

Their sword turns aside from the water of my heart,

though I know its two edges burn with thirst.

Their spear recoils in the thrust, until

its joints seem too short to reach me.

Victory's eagle beneath them is wing-broken,

and death's vulture is sent flying above them.

Indeed, I made the house of Fihr laugh on my account,

with spears over which Nizar wept.

They are meteors when they blaze for war,

    so spearheads are their sparks.

When their lances cease from thrusting,

they wait for nothing but death.

When their hands stream forth in generosity,

the rain-laden clouds hide their water.

Through them my sword's edge grew familiar with its targets,

and risk emboldened me in the pursuit.
