بَريقٌ بِالطَوالِعِ إِذ تَراءى
Ah, by God, what longing was kindled
O God, what passion illumined
by a gleam among the rising stars when it appeared!
A radiance in the constellations when it appeared

فَلَمّا جازَنا مَلَأَ السَماءَ
It came upon us like a vein's pulse in the night,
It seized us like the throbbing of the pulse and weakness
then, passing us, it filled the sky.
So when it crossed us it filled the sky

Its flashing was like the hands of smiths
As if its glow were hands of lightning
polishing their keen blades anew.
Restoring clarity to its ships

It stirred me so deeply that my companions said,
I was disturbed by it until my companion said
"For some reason, lightning has roused a sickness in you."
For something that had stirred you, the lightning was a malady

Never before would it lead my gaze
nor carried my mind wherever it pleased.
Nor would my determination go where it willed

My two friends, loose my rein, for I
My two friends, leave me be, for I
surpass you both in pressing a resolve through.
Am most resolute among you on the intended course

My youthful longing allowed me only a backward glance
My youthfulness refused me except to glance
toward the vanished campsite traces, and a turning back.
At the beautiful maidens and to bend

So if, as I travel, you two see my body
So if you see me go ahead of you two
ahead of you, my heart remains behind.
My heart remains behind

And how often in an hour have I detained
the company's mounts, denying them swift departure,
The tribe’s steeds, preventing their escape

Upon a hill like the mantle of a Yemeni
worn away and mingling with the empty wastes.
It erased and mingled with the sand

Desolate lands where no birds are disturbed,
Desolate places where no birds alight
and no morning traveler startles the gazelles.
Nor a returning traveler startles the gazelles

Oh how it elegantly intoxicates me
with its dweller, and makes me weep when empty!
With its silence and makes me weep in solitude

I call to the riders: "Take its soil—
I call to the traveling group beyond you
perhaps in it lies a cure for one who is sick."
Perhaps in it is a remedy for one who is sick

كَأَنّا قَد تَساقَينا الطِلاءَ
We gave one another remembrance to drink, then turned away,
We shared reminiscence so we bent close
as though we had shared draughts of thickened wine.
As if we had shared a poisoned drink

We turned the pale camels aside; they lavished plaintive cries upon us,
And we kneaded the bread to console ourselves
singing to us, while we lavished tears upon them.
Singing to each other and amplifying the weeping

How long this repeated return to youthful ways,
To what end is this frequenting of the drinking places
when the dawn of gray hair has already shone upon me?
While the dawn of gray hair has illuminated me

O revealer of flaws, may black hair be blessed with rain,
So appearer of defects, it has watered a darkness
a covering over their ugliness.
To cover over its ugliness

My youth, if ever you did me good,
My youth, if you have done good one day
gray hair has wronged me and done ill.
Old age has been unfair and done evil

O giver of delight without reckoning,
And oh granter of bounty without account
one has come to me who rations my share of bounty.
One has come to me to limit my share

وَأَعجَلَنا فَأَسرَعنا الأَداءَ
It was a pleasure the nights had lent us;
Goods we borrowed from the nights
we were pressed, and hastened to repay.
And we hurried so we hastened the repayment

We resented fate; yet, if we were wise,
We resented fate, though had we been reasonable
what does our resentment avail against fate?
Our resentment would not change fate

وَإِنand even if لَمnot أَستَفِدI gain إِلّاexcept عَناءَhardship

I shall press on toward what has no blemish,
I will go on to that which has no defect
even if I gain nothing but hardship.
Even if I gain only difficulty from it

And I shall seek a goal that, if it flings me far,
And I will seek a goal - if it eludes me
will carry me to death or eminence.
I am struck down in battle or ascent

I am the son of those who race ahead to noble heights,
I am the son of those who were foremost to the heights
when the distant finish turns the laggards back.
When the great distance shortened the lagging

وَعَطَّلَ بَعضُ جَمعِهِمُ الفَضاءَ
When they ride, the deserts grow cramped,
When they rode, the open spaces narrowed
and even part of their host blocks the open expanse.
And some of their gathering hampered the expanse

One of those who spurn humiliation begot me,
I sleep from refusing the injustice of sleep
and poured that pride upon me.
Bestowing on me such haughtiness

شَأَونا الناسَ أَخلاقاً لِداناً

وَأَيماناً رِطاباً وَاِعتِلاءَ
We outstripped mankind in gentle manners,
We made people's morals pliant
in right hands moist with bounty, and in lofty rank.
With slack oaths and arrogance

And we are those who descend upon every frontier
pouring blood along its edges.
Shedding blood upon its flanks

And we plunge into every terror,
And we are the ones who plunge into every horror
when the coward creeps through it under cover.
When the coward wavers with it from adversity
وَنَحنُand we اللابِسونَthose who wear لِكُلِّof every مَجدٍglory

And we are the ones who don for every glory
as armor and as mantle, whenever we wish.
Armor or attire when we wish

Through experience we straightened every affair
We have set right by trials every matter
that insisted on nothing but crookedness and twisting.
That refused except to be crooked and twisted

We bring against our foes an army's choicest ranks,
We drag behind us to the enemies a train
broad as the night, following the banner.
Like the expanse of night pursuing the banner

إِلى أَن نورِدَ الأَسَلَ الظِماءَ
With it we prolong the thirst of lean, full-grown steeds
With it we extend the echo of the flashing swords
until we bring the thirsty spears to drink,
Until we deliver the thirsty blades to drink

وَطَيَّرَ عَن قَضيبِهِمُ اللِحاءَ
when testing our foes draws blood and kills,
When the foe is frenzied, mute, and deaf
and sends the bark flying from their branch.
And the blades have cast off their scabbards

فَلا هوجاً يُجيزُ وَلا رُخاءَ
A dust storm before which the winds retreat,
A clamor from which souls recoil
letting neither violent gales nor gentle breezes through.
Admitting no frenzy or comfort

Towering peaks from mountains of dust they hurl
Mountains from the cliffs of an-Naq`
up endlessly, morning or evening.
Hurling rocks down eternally, morning or evening

And many a fool eats my flesh behind my back,
And a backbiter devouring my flesh in my absence
yet in his eating lies an incurable disease.
Though his eating has a putrid sickness

He speaks ill whenever you are absent from him,
He speaks ill when you are absent from him
yet offers me a gracious appearance and greeting.
And flatters me gracefully when we meet

I have readied for him—and soon he will drink deeply from them—
I have prepared for him, and soon he will gulp down
vessels brimming with affliction.
A cupful of adversity that will fill him

Among us is every thick-necked lion courting death:
And each of us, when humbled, is submissive
if you dose him with humiliation, he vomits it out.
If you overcame him by abasing him

When wronged, he shows a tiger's fury on his cheeks,
If his edge is blunted he sheathes his blades
and stands upon his claws in proud refusal.
And stands upon his legs refusing

Yet if he is called upon while forbearance falters,
And if called while forbearance guides him
he nobly inclines toward the caller and returns.
He inclines with nobility to the caller in loyalty

And we refuse that half should be from us
or to grant our challenger equal standing.
Or to give our opponents equal footing

we would impose on mankind nothing but aggression.
We would not be known by creation except as enemies
