Zaynab's faded traces on the plain have stirred you.

After her, they became effaced and deserted—a bare plain.

Away with dwellings empty of friendly company!

There the owls have a frightening hoot and a rhythmic beat.

May no steady rain from the sky drench them,

pouring in the thick of noonday heat, soaking deep.

If you are noble, hovering low over goodness,

you will not keep alighting on the head of baseness.

So follow the paths of virtue, singing praises to its father,

as long as you live; and be, in his eyes, al-Qa'qa' ibn Shawr.

    لا تَرهبُ من بَعدِها خَصاصَةَ إِدقاع

    You will wake with the fruits of your hopes hanging close above you;

thereafter you will not fear the privations of grinding poverty.

So hear a proverb: can a drinker of wine be compared

among men, when drunk, with a drinker of beer?
