وَعدُكُمyour promise بِالخُرجِof the saddlebag وَالنَّطعِand the leather mat
بَرقٌlightning وَلَكِنand yet خُلَّبُdeceptive (rainless) اللَّمعِthe flash
Your promise of a saddlebag and a leather mat
Is lightning, but its flash is deceptive.
خُرجٌa saddlebag خُروجُdeparture الرُّوحِof the soul مِنfrom دونِهِshort of it
وَالنَطعand the leather mat بَينَbetween السَيفِthe sword وَالنَطعِand the executioner's mat
A saddlebag—the soul departs before one obtains it;
And the leather mat lies between the sword and the executioner's mat.
ماnot لَكُمُfor you ذَنبٌblame وَلَكِنand yet لِمَنfor whoever
حَلَّsettled بِوادٍin a valley غَيرِnot ذيpossessing زَرعِcrops
You bear no blame; the blame belongs instead to whoever
Settled in a valley devoid of crops.
مَنwhoever كانَwas يَرجوhoping for خَيرَكُمُyour bounty بَعدهاafter that
فَهوَthen he أَحَقُّmost deserving الناسِof all people بِالصَّفعِof being slapped
Whoever hopes for your bounty after that
Then he, of all people, most deserves to be slapped.

Had I not been Ashʿab, I would not have come away from
ʿUrqūb's promises with nothing gained.
