الدَمعِtears فيupon الخَدِّthe cheek مَسفوحٌshed فَمَسكوبُthen poured out
الدَمعِ في الخَدِّ مَسفوحٌ فَمَسكوبُ
وَالنَومُand sleep ناءٍfar away عَنِfrom الأَجفانِthe eyelids مَسلوبُstolen away
وَالنَومُ ناءٍ عَنِ الأَجفانِ مَسلوبُ
Tears are shed upon the cheek, then poured out;
Tears are shed down my cheeks, poured out and drained
And sleep is far from the eyelids, stolen away.
Sleep is denied to my eyelids, robbed away

تَرثي لِمَن دونَهُ في الحُزنِ يَعقوبُ
O likeness of Joseph in wondrous beauty, will you not
O you who resemble Joseph in splendid beauty
pity one whose sorrow surpasses Jacob's?
Won't you lament for one in sorrow like Jacob?

Torment my heart with whatever you wish, for it can endure.
Torment me as much as you wish, my heart can bear it
How sweet love is, yet in it there is torment!
How sweet is love, yet in it there is torment

My patience in longing is a patience none can bear
My patience for passion is a patience no man can endure
among humankind except God's prophet Job.
Except Allah's prophet Job amidst all people
