Spring unfolded for us the folds of its fragrance,

and withered life grew green from its moistening.

A season smiled, lifting the veil from its beauty,

after a season that persisted in its frown.

It is like an imam; every blackbird upon

a bough has brought its pulpit and its preacher.

It is spring's alchemist, excelling in

the craft of silvering it and gilding it.

Those are the dirhams and dinars that

are in its garden, and the great trees are among its minted coins.

And its stock flowers' fingers pitched their tents,

then strewed upon camphor the dust of its faults.

It spread its palms like a lover praying to

the Merciful to attain union with his beloved.

And the rose is like one blushing, and the stock flower is

shy, like a lovesick lover afflicted by his watcher.

The breeze blew through it and awakened the sleeping

lovely blossoms, which awoke when it blew.

Indeed, the breeze's languid breath brings to

the ailing lover his cure through its physician.

Ah, how lovely the branches' dance to the singing

of birds, when they excel in their enchanting song!

O you who blame a drinker for wine,

who reaps the fruits of his desires from his drink:

leave off reproaching him if you are his well-wisher, for part of

his refinement is to defy what you babble about.

Indeed, reproaching the lover for his passion

entices him toward it and increases his desire.
