Rise, then unveil the daughter of the green vine,

In the cup, like a red ruby.

Wine—whenever she shines in her cup,

Her rays spill over the seated companions.

From every heart comes a longing to drink her,

So it is as though she were created from passions.

And when she appears in the pitch-dark night,

She routs the darkness of night with blessings.

O you who reproach me for drinking her, you have enticed me

Through your reproach of her, to the utmost.

Ah, how delightful she is in autumn and other seasons,

    At all times and hours,

From the hand of a brown-skinned Babylonian, whose figure

Sways like a straight, dark-brown spear.

And the cup has scattered upon his cheeks

Anemone petals, an enticement for the beholder.

His eyes are two narcissi, but the two roses

Of his cheeks are filled with the blood of the entrails.

Life is found only in wine and drinking her,

Yet only in the company of the witty and the sensible.
