O you whose mouth is the blossom of daisies,

and whose brow bears the light of morning,

your eyelids have always been ailing, yet sound—

so alas for my liver, afflicted by the ailing yet sound!

Your glance is tipsy yet sober; and how lovely

is a tipsy yet sober glance, O friend!

And your gaze outdoes keen, gleaming swords,

and your stature shames the brown shafts of spears.

Perhaps, O desire of souls, you will heal

    hearts whose wounds bleed for love of you;

hearts that wander ceaselessly in longing

in remembrance of you, morning and evening.

Nor is a sorrowful man, maddened by longing,

who has lost his reason for love of you, to blame.

For he heeds no one's prohibitions,

nor submits to a rebuker's rebuke.

Indeed, I have become peerless among lovers,

just as you have become peerless among the beautiful.

Oh, how strange that I love him in earnest,

while you deliberately kill me in jest!

Can I hope for the dream-phantom, while the steed of my eye

spends the night fiercely resisting sleep?

And many a night the phantom made its way toward me,

    across sandgrouse nesting hollows, after ostrich nests;

then clasped my hand and left in my right hand

the fragrance of musk and Rabāḥī camphor.
