O rider urging on the sturdy she-camel,

with longing and urging as her guide and chanting driver,

turn aside to Jillaq, whose Ghouta spreads wide,

and greet its congregational mosque and its people for me.

Were it not for the eternity we cannot expect here,

I would say the gardens of eternity resemble it.

In beauty, it has no equal to rival it.

As though Jillaq were the Garden of Paradise, and the

rivers its rivers, flowing through its valley.

    تُطفي بِهِ نارَ آبٍ حينَ تحميها

    Kanun's water is in the limpid stream of its hill;

with it you quench August's fire when it scorches the city.

through their people—may their dwellings never lack them!

Its Saturdays display the flowers in their splendor,

beauties among them that the cold had hidden.

How sweet the flowers of spring's breaths there!

And the birds' singers delight us with their voices.

they answer one another—exalted be God, their Maker!

of al-Sahib ibn Ali, their hands outspread.

ban trees, reciting a psalter in their treetops.

The nightingales have melodies which their beaks

repeat and give forth, flutes that they are.

Its boughs seem lutes, delighting us,

their third strings following their second strings.

Damascus, in its beauty, is the city of pillars, without

doubt or misgiving for anyone who sees it.

its youths in the squares within it.

swaying in the troop, proudly drunk on youth.

his glance a spearhead above its top.

before me—what recourse have I? Alas, my bewilderment in them!

drowsy, languid ones that disdain awakening.

By God, I chose him only when my soul believed

there was no equal of his to console it.

A gazelle among the Turks, whose glances have not left

me any thought of practicing graceful patience.

Damascus, never once fearing its governor's might.

Damascus—if you approach it from any direction,

upon the high ground embraced by its outskirts,

its gardens resemble a sea, its pavilions

ships upon it with their anchors cast.

Or the sky, its valley the Milky Way, and the

palaces stars within it, their night-traveler on his way.

Those springtime abodes! Neither Wadi al-‘Aqiq nor

Najd nor the vale of Bawwan can rival them.

Good tidings for it and its people in its precincts,

for God guards them there and guards it.

who protects it with every kind of justice.

It is enough—amply enough—as added honor for it,

that the vizier Safi al-Din holds it in his care.

He it is who, with his mighty favors, clothed

its days in beauty, so its nights grew white.

    فَاللَهُ مِن عَينِ مَن فيها يُوَقّيها

    Until all other cities came to envy it;

may God shield it from their inhabitants' evil eye.

Its apricot days have no equal

in beauty—no, nor anything to rival their fragrance.

As though its spreading trees were pavilions pitched

of fine silk, resembling their beholder's beloved.

The green heaven of its trees transforms,

with its shooting stars, bare earth into a jeweled beauty.

It guides, and grants wishes to souls and to

eyes—God bless its guide and giver!

Visitors circled its trees in bands,

disheveled; the trees answered, and their endeavors did not fail.

So too our lord the vizier's creed: its rulings

are circled by piety, which grants them refuge.

It is truth itself, proclaimed in praise; and many

a creed has been framed in figurative language to deceive!

It has become a premise, yet its conclusion is

seas of knowledge, their waves surging high.

A creed: from the seas of knowledge are strung

on the thread of its brevity their costliest pearls.

words it is sublime, though its meanings are subtle.

transmitted, and the soundest speech; its author has triumphed.

its primary feathers long ago outstripped its secondary ones.

and nothing hides the sun on a clear day.

He established foundations in it for creeds—how

consummate in learning are its architect and builder!

    لَولا أَياديهِ خِفنا مِن تَلاشيها

    Through it he revived the author of Revival of the Sciences;

but for his favors, we would have feared their disappearance.

    وَأَنتَ أَفضَلُ تَهذيباً وَتَنبيها

    They said, 'With al-Ghazali the sciences were sealed';

yet you surpass him in refinement and elucidation.

O minister, praised by the children of the

world, its townsfolk and nomads, for your goodness!

Even so, all apologize for falling short

before you, those in its farthest regions and its nearest.

The sun and musk—their description has baffled people,

and you are like them in worth and freedom from blemish.

You are a matter of consensus, on which no

adversaries have differed, nor aired their whispered counsels.

Your fortunate days have preserved those loyal to them

in all they desired, and destroyed those who oppose them.

To your pens have bowed the white sword-blades and the

brown, slender spears, their tips trembling.

So be safe, endure, remain, ascend forever, soar and grow tall,

in a realm whose spreading trees offer sweet harvests.
