ياO إِخوَتيmy brothers شَرحُthe account of حاليmy condition بَعدَكُمsince your departure عَجَبُa wonder

نَأَيتُمُyou have gone far away فَشُهوريso my months كُلُّهاall of them رَجَبُRajab
O my brothers, the tale of my state since you left is a wonder.
You have gone far away, so all my months are Rajab.
أَظمَيتُمُyou made thirsty الصَبَّthe lovesick one فَاِستَسقىso he begged for drink الجُفونَthe eyelids دَماًblood
فَحَبَّةُso the seed of القَلبthe heart فيهاwithin it أَنبَتَsprouted اللَّهَبُthe flame
You left the lover parched, so he begged his eyelids for blood.
So in the heart's seed flame has sprouted.

My eyes are two springs whose pupils have drowned,
both of them—is there any way to rescue each one?
قَلبيmy heart بِجلّقin Jilliq (Damascus) حرّانٌparched (also Harran) بِمصرَin Egypt أَسىًwith grief

My heart is in Jilliq, parched with grief in Egypt;
and my cheek's basin holds milk drawn from my eyelids.
ليI have بَعدَكُمsince your departure زَفَراتٌsighs نارُهاtheir fire صعدٌrising upward

Since you left, I have sighs whose fire rises;
tears kindle it, their water cascading down.

The lofty mountains cannot bear my ardent
longings—so what could letters possibly bear?
وَأَعظَمُand the greatest الوجدِpassionate grief دَمعtears غَيرُnot مُمتَنِعٍwithheld
عَلىfrom المُحِبِّthe lover وَصَبرٌand patience قُفلُهُwhose lock أَشِبُintractably tangled
And love's deepest anguish is tears never withheld
from the lover, and patience with an intractable lock.

My life's days are all five-day spells of thirst; so, O
scouts of my distant watering place, when comes the night march to water?

The times when my fate betrayed me have become non-Arabs;
will the Arabs, then, bring me any faithfulness?
