    O moon, union with whom is life

    to me, and whose estrangement is death.

    How long will you keep forsaking me?

    You believed what the slanderers said.

    And I have no answer for the reproacher,

    even when he forbade me, except silence.

    O idol of enchantment, whose

    beauty all descriptions fail to capture.

    Had I not feared my Lord's punishment,

    fasting and prayer would have been for you.

    أَما لِهَذا الغِنى زَكاةُ

    You are rich in every kind of beauty;

    are no alms due on this wealth?

    And indeed, a rich man's delay in payment is injustice,

    since there is no fulfillment, and there are no favors.

    You unjustly turned Fityan away from you,

    yet the grammarians did not permit his declension.

    For the envious one has turned away from me,

    abandoning me, with gloating in his heart.

    ما هَكَذا تَفعَلُ الوُلاةُ

    You ruled my heart, then dealt unjustly within it;

    that is not how rulers act.

    فَاِعدِل كَما تَعدِل القُضاةُ

    For you are judge, and you are adversary;

    so judge fairly, as judges do.

    Give help, be fair, be generous, and show kindness

    to me as a favor, for I have done no wrong.

    I am the obedient one who suffers

    in love what the disobedient have suffered.

    مِن لَحظِهِ تَخجَلُ المَهاةُ

    A guileless gazelle has captured my heart;

    his glance puts the oryx to shame.

    A white gazelle: whenever he glances furtively,

    the archers do not escape his arrow.

    بَل عُدتُ فيهِ كَما بَداتُ

    I have not forgotten my love for him;

    rather, I have returned to it just as I began.
