My secret is disclosed by the tongues of tears.
My secret is revealed through tears’ tongues though it be kept
Marvel at them: silent, yet eloquent!
So wonder at their silence, yet they loudly cry

How well I once concealed the secret of loving you!
Your love was not so hidden that I would conceal it
But the tears of love's brother betray him.
But my brother tears’ passion made it known

Can you escape it or find relief therefrom

My heart moans as one who moans from misery
one amid sorrow whose innermost parts are wounds.
Between miseries is one whose wounds gape

Your charms sought my love and affection expectantly
before marriage, illicit union answered them.
So before marriage, passion responded to their call

My heart is a loving friend, compliant in its love for you;
My heart is a lover accompanying your love
yet in that love it rebels against the reproachers.
And has a wing to strike those who would reproach it

I have become due to my love for them a specter so what
a disgrace for phantoms to visit one another?
Shame that specters would visit each other!

You entered it, and those gleams shone forth
I ransom you from one who rewards kindness by returning evil
through which clarity revealed an abundance of radiance.
As if innate to him is treacherous betrayal
يَفديكَmay he ransom you مَنhe who بِالسوءِwith evil جازىrepaid مُحسِناًa benefactor

May he be your ransom who repaid a benefactor with evil,
They encountered a lion, dignified yet fiercely roaring
for in his nature he is like a crocodile.
When riled like a barking dog that would attack
أَلفاكَhe found you لَيثاًa lion زائِراًroaring فَمُزَمجِراًthen growling

He found you a roaring lion, then a growling one,
You bear the prestige but not the violence of Hajjaj My master, you who tramples the neck of tyrants
when the barker came with his snarling.
Who can boast like you, purchased by mere vow
لَكَyours is هَيبَةُthe awe of الحَجّاجِal-Hajjaj لاnot فَتَكاتُهُhis deadly assaults

Yours is al-Hajjaj's dread majesty, not his deadly violence
Of gracefully worded praise—his profits tripled
of old, for you are the great and noble lord.
You joke in earnest while opening no doors to temptation
مَنwhoever كانَis مِثلَكَlike you يَشتَرىpurchases بِنَوالِهِwith his giving

Whoever, like you, purchases with his giving
As if but playing without intent to disgrace
fair praise—his profits flourish.
You dispel the gloom of every dark misfortune feared

He gives lavish gifts in earnest, though no mouth has opened
By the sparkle of your eloquent and beaming brow
to ask him; it is as though he were jesting.
Spring has come to meet you, ever fresh its tidings

It dispels the hidden gloom of every dark calamity
So for us there lie restful meadows and verdant fields
whose harm is feared—your radiant brow.
The good deeds of the Benefactor blot out wrongs

Your camel-train arrived, with spring led at its side;
Perpetrated by oppressive days once come to pass
so we have a lush resting-ground and merriment.

The wrongs of every tyrannous age have been made forgotten
From ruin are the destitute and downtrodden
by the ever-pouring kindness of Abd al-Muhsin.
He remains forever revered in an enduring bliss

He is the Kaaba of generosity; by circling it
Throughout days and nights since time began its track
the needy and the destitute seek refuge.

May he remain in enduring might and blessing,
as long as night darkens or morning shines.
