فازَwon قِدحيmy lot-arrow وَهوَand it is المُعَلَّىthe highest lot-arrow وَقَدحيand my kindling
وَتَوَلّىand departed بَرحيmy anguish وَأَقبَلَand arrived رِبحيmy gain
My lot-arrow has won—it is the highest—and my kindling too;
My cup prevailed, though it was lofty, and my cup
my anguish has departed, and my gain has come,
My woe turned away, and my profit drew near.

when I see the radiant sun in early
When I see the brilliant sun in the morning
forenoon beneath the night of Ibn Subh’s hair.
Under the night of Ibn Subhi's hair,

In his glances he unsheathes a sword’s edge;
Brandishing the edge of a sword in its sheath,
from his upright figure he levels a spear’s shaft.
Opening from his stature the length of a spear,
إِنif يَكُنis وَجهُهhis face حَوىcontains كُلَّall حُسنٍbeauty

If his face holds all beauty,
If his face contained all beauty,
then my reprover over him holds all ugliness.
Then my blame contained all ugliness.
ياO دُموعيmy tears سُحّيpour forth عَلىover الخَدِّthe cheek وَجداًin longing
ماnot مِنَof العَدلِjustice فيin الهَوىlove أَنthat تَشِحّيyou be sparing
O my tears, pour over my cheek in longing;
O my tears, flow plentifully down my cheek in love-pain!
it is not just in love for you to be sparing.
There is no justice in love that you should be stingy.
ماnot تَثَنّىswayed فيin الدِرعِthe armor بِالسَيفِwith the sword وَالخوand the helmet (word begins)
ذَةِhelmet (word ends) وَالرُمحِand the spear راغِبٌdesirous فيof الصُلحِpeace
No one sways in armor with sword and helmet,
He who bends not in mail with sword, helmet, and spear,
and lance, while seeking peace.
Is no lover of peace.
خالَفَdefied الشَرعَsacred law فَاِستَباحَso he deemed lawful دَمَthe blood of الناthe people (word begins)

سِpeople (word ends) فَفيهِso concerning him الهَوىlove طَويلُlengthy الشَرحِthe explanation
He defied sacred law and deemed people’s blood lawful;
He transgressed the law, shedding people's blood unlawfully,
so love for him takes long explaining.
So in him desire is of ample extent.

His black eyelids have intoxicated us, but
His black eyelids have intoxicated us, yet
my counsel, friend, has unsheathed gleaming swords.
Unleash, O preacher of my advice, the white swords!

If a reprover returns to reproaching me over him,
If a blamer returns to blame,
I shall not forgo rubbing his ear with salt.
I spare not his ear with sarcasm.

صارِeyes (word ends) وَالطَرفُand the gaze فاتِنٌbewitching بِاللَمحِwith a fleeting glance
His mouth almost takes away sight with its gleam,
The glance all but takes away the mouth with the eyes,
and his gaze bewitches with a fleeting glance.
And the charming glance is enchanting at a glance.
ماnot وَقاهُprotected him الإِلَهُGod شحّاًstinginess بِوَصلٍin granting union

God has not shielded him from stinginess in granting union,
God did not prevent him from union in avarice,
yet, for all that, he prospers through stinginess.
Yet he, despite that, prospers in withholding.
إِنindeed صَوميmy fast عَنهُfrom him كَصَومِlike the fast of النَصارىthe Christians

Indeed, my fast from him is like the Christians’ fast;
My fasting from him is like Christians' fasting -
would that I knew when I shall see my Easter feast!
Would that I knew when I shall see the feast of my desire!
