I entrust to God the one who, whether he alights or journeys on,
I entrust to God the one who, whether he stays or departs,
has made no homeland for himself but my inmost being.
Has taken no home for himself but my innermost being.

O you who dwell within my heart and set it aflame,
O dweller in my heart, even as you burn it,
yet my heart accepts no one but you as its dweller.
Yet my heart is content with no other dweller.

O you who deliberately slay me—if someone asked, “Is there anyone
O you who kill me deliberately! If asked, 'Is there anyone
who loves his deliberate killer?” I would answer: “I.”
Who deliberately loves his killer?' I would say, 'I do.'

Indeed, by your languorous eyelids and your most—
Indeed, by your drowsy eyelids and your countenance—
radiant aspect, sleep has deserted my own eyelids.
Most radiant—my eyelids have indeed forsaken slumber.
لاdo not تَحسِبواthink أَنَّنيthat I مِنfrom بَعدِafter بُعدِكُمُyour absence

Do not suppose that, after you went far away,
Do not think that, since you went away,
I ever looked among mankind, even for a day, upon a lovely sight.
I have ever beheld a beautiful sight among people.
وَداعُكُمyour farewell أَودَعَlodged الأَسقامَailments فيin بَدَنيmy body

Your farewell lodged every sickness in my body,
Your farewell lodged ailments in my body,
ever since your camel-driver, on separation’s day, urged the stout camels on.
Since your camel-driver urged on the stout camels on the day of parting.
أَنتُمyou خَلَعتُمyou bestowed عَلَيناupon us مِنfrom صُدودِكُمُyour rejection
لَمّاwhen نَزَعناwe took off ثِيابَthe garments of الصَبرِpatience ثَوبَa robe of ضَنىwasting sickness
Through your rejection, you clothed us,
You bestowed upon us, through your rejection,
when we shed patience’s garments, in a robe of wasting pain.
When we shed the robes of patience, a robe of wasting sickness.

Long ago, from your speech, you lodged within our hearing
Long ago you entrusted to my hearing, through your words,
pearl necklaces that rose in worth as their price grew dear.
Pearl necklaces, exalted as their price grew dear.
خُذواtake دُموعيmy tears الَّتيwhich مِنfrom مُقلَتيmy eye اِنتَثَرَتscattered

Take these tears of mine, scattered from my eye:
Take my tears, which have scattered from my eye;
they are the necklaces you lodged within the ear.
For they are the necklaces you entrusted to my ear.
نِمتُمyou slept وَأَسهَرتُموناand you kept us awake وَحشَةًin loneliness لَكُمُfor you
أَوحَشتُموناyou made us lonely وَماyet not تَستَوحِشونَyou feel lonely لَناfor us
You slept and kept us wakeful, lonely for you;
You slept and kept us sleepless with loneliness for you;
you left us desolate, yet never pine for us.
You made us lonely, yet feel no loneliness for us.

At separation’s dawn, departure grew urgent, and they rode away—
Departure grew urgent on the morning of separation, and they left;
alas for my grief at the joy of those who gloat over us.
Alas for the joy of those who gloat over us!

They left me calling behind their pale camels,
And they left me calling out behind their pale camels:
“Gently!” O what a war separation wages—what sorrow!
Be gentle! Ah, what ruin in parting! Ah, my grief!

If asked, 'What do you wish?' I would say, 'The return of our nights

At Khayf Mina—that is wish enough for me.'

Decreeing the return of nights of union that bring us together.
