How often in love I lament your weariness of me,

And long for union with you in private.

O you, in stature a bān shoot on a curving dune,

    Be just—how beautiful your uprightness!

Adorn yourself with good deeds, O you whose

Beauty has gathered all humankind’s beauty.

For you are a full moon; I wane

Only because I love your perfection.

O you who darken my spirits in this life,

May God never darken your spirits in it.

Grant refuge to a lover who prolonged—when

You shunned him—his humble entreaties to you.

    أَطَلتَ يا ذا الغِنى مِطالَك

    Fulfill your promise, for a rich man’s delay is injustice;

You have delayed too long, O wealthy one.
