رُوَيدَكَgo gently كَمhow often تَجنيyou do harm وَكَمand how often تَتَدَلَّلُyou act coy
عَلَيَّtoward me وَكَمand how often أُغضيI overlook وَكَمand how often أَتَذَلَّلُI abase myself
Go gently! How often you wrong me, how often you act coy
With me—and how often I overlook it, how often I abase myself.
لَزِمتَyou have clung to مَلالاًweariness ماnot تَمَلُّyou tire of لُزومَهُclinging to it
فَقَلبيso my heart عَلىupon جَمرِembers الغَضاthe ghada tree يَتَمَلمَلُwrithes
You have clung to weariness, never tiring of clinging to it;
So my heart writhes upon the embers of ghada wood.
وَوَكَّلتَنيand you charged me بِاللَيلِat night أَرعىI watch نُجومَهُits stars
وَأَنتَand you بِطولِwith the prolongation of الصَدِّturning away عَنّيfrom me مُوَكَّلُcharged
And you have charged me, by night, to watch its stars,
While you are charged with prolonged avoidance of me.
وَلاand no غَروَwonder أَنthat جادَتgave freely جُفونيmy eyelids بِمائِهاwith their water
إِذاwhen كانَis مَنthe one whom أَهواهُI love him بِالوَصلِwith union يَبخَلُis miserly
And no wonder my eyelids have poured forth their water,
When the one I love is miserly with union.
وَقَدand indeed صارَhas become هَذاthis السُخطُdispleasure مِنكَfrom you سَجِيَّةًan ingrained trait
فَلَيتَكَso if only you يَوماًone day بِالرِضىwith favor تَتَجَمَّلُyou adorn yourself
And this displeasure of yours has become second nature;
So if only one day you would adorn yourself with favor.
تُجَرِّدُyou unsheathe مِنfrom أَجفانِكَyour eyelids السودِblack أَبيضاًa gleaming sword
عَلىagainst كُلِّevery مَنone whom تَرنوyou gaze إِلَيهِtoward him فَتَقتُلُand so you slay
You unsheathe from your black eyelids a gleaming sword,
Against everyone you gaze upon—and so you slay.
وَماand no لَحظَةٌa glance إِلّاbut تَهُزُّbrandishes مُهَنَّداًan Indian-steel sword
يُصابُis struck بِهِby it مِمَّنof one who يُحِبُّكَloves you مَقتَلُa vital spot
And not a glance but brandishes a sword of Indian steel,
By which a vital spot in one who loves you is struck.
فَكُنso be سالِكاًfollowing حُكمَthe rule of الزَمانِTime فَإِنَّهُfor indeed it
يَجورُacts unjustly مِراراًrepeatedly ثُمَّthen يَحنوgrows tender فَيَعدِلُand so acts justly
So follow the rule of Time, for it
Acts unjustly time and again, then grows tender and deals justly.
وَقَدand indeed كانَwas حُسنُthe excellence of الصَبرِpatience مِنfrom قَبلُbefore ناصِريmy ally
فَإِنso if دامَpersists ذاthis الإِعراضُturning away عَنّيfrom me سَيُخذَلُit will be forsaken
And noble patience was once my ally;
So if this shunning of me persists, that ally will be forsaken.
وَأَحزَمُand the most prudent of خَلقِthe creatures of اللَهِGod رَأياًin judgment فَتىًa youth إِذاwhen
نَباproved inhospitable مَنزِلٌa dwelling يَوماًone day بِهِto him يَتَحَوَّلُhe moves elsewhere
And the soundest in judgment among God's creatures is a youth who, when
A dwelling proves inhospitable to him one day, moves elsewhere.
فَكَمso how often مَلَّgrew weary مِنّيof me عائِديmy sickbed visitor وَمَلَلتُهُand I grew weary of him
وَعاصَيتُand I defied فيin حُبِّيكَlove for you مَنwhoever كانَwas يَعذِلُreproaching me
So often my sickbed visitor has tired of me, and I have tired of him;
And for love of you I defied whoever reproached me.
وَأَيّامُناand our days تُطوىare folded away وَلاand no وَصلَunion بَينَناbetween us
وَتُنشَرُand are unfolded وَالهِجرانُand estrangement لاnot يَتَزَيَّلُdeparts
And our days are folded away, with no union between us,
And unfolded, while estrangement never departs.
أَرىI see الحُسنَbeauty قَدindeed وَلّىhas appointed عِذارَكَyour cheek's down دَولَةًdominion
وَلَكِنَّهُbut it عَمّاafter قَليلٍa short while سَيُعزَلُit will be deposed
I see that Beauty has granted your cheek's down dominion,
But it will soon be deposed.
فَأَحسِنso be kind بِناto us مادامَas long as ذَلِكَthat مُمكِناًpossible
وَأَجمِلand act graciously فَقَتليfor killing me عامِداًdeliberately لَيسَis not يَجمُلُis fitting
So treat us well while that remains possible,
And be gracious, for killing me deliberately is not gracious.
