    Did it stir you, O Saʿd, on parting day, when they left—

    the singing of doves that set the bān trees dancing?

    فَإعلانُها سِرٌّ وَسِرُّكَ إِعلانُ

    So they kept pouring tears as they cooed;

    for what they proclaim is secret, while your secret is proclaimed.

    فَفي القَلبِ نيرانٌ وَفي الجَفنِ طوفانُ

    Indeed, they lodged longing in you the moment they bade farewell;

    so there are fires in the heart, and a deluge in the eyelid.

    And a slender-waisted one, honey-lipped, supple of

    body, with swaying hips, drowsy-eyed.

    فَحارَت وَغارَت مِنهُ كُثبٌ وَأَغصانُ

    And I have not forgotten him as he swayed and his hips quivered;

    so dunes and branches were bewildered and grew jealous of him.

    Skittish—and this is nothing new in a gazelle.

    Able to pay, yet he delays and evades repaying his debt.

    Yet through all he undergoes, empty is his

    heart, while mine is full of longing for him.
