ماسَتswayed gracefully لَناfor us يَومَon the day of بَينِparting الحَيِّthe tribe أَغصانُboughs
تَرتَجُّquiver مِنfrom تَحتِهاbeneath them فيin الأُزرِthe waist-wraps كُثبانُsand dunes
Boughs swayed before us on the day of the tribe's parting;
beneath them, sand dunes quivered within their waist-wraps.
وَقَدand had أَدَرنَthey turned عُيوناًeyes فيin مَحاجِرِهاtheir sockets
تِلكَthose السُيوفُthe swords لَهاfor them الأَجفانُthe eyelids أَجفانُsheaths
And they had turned their eyes within their sockets—
those swords have eyelids for sheaths.
فَهُنَّso they يُشبِهنَthey resemble غِزلانَthe gazelles of الصَريمِthe thicket وَلاbut no
وَاللَهِby God ماnot مِثلَهاlike them فيin الحُسنِbeauty غِزلانُgazelles
So they resemble the gazelles of the thicket—but no:
by God, no gazelles match them in beauty.
هاجَتstirred بَلابِلُthe nightingales of نَعمانٍNu'man بَلابِلَناour anguish
لِوجدٍfor longing بِناwithin us هاجَتهُstirred it نَعمانُNu'man
The nightingales of Nu'man stirred our anguish.
Ah, for the longing within us that Nu'man awakened!
وَالوُرقُand the gray doves تُطرِبُناdelight us فيin البانِthe moringa trees صادِحَةًsinging aloud
فَهَلso, are ...? لَهاfor them فيin اللّوىal-Liwa العيدانُthe boughs عيدانُlutes
And gray doves delight us, singing in the moringa trees;
so are the boughs at al-Liwa lutes for them?
تِلكَthose الغُصونُthe boughs بِهاon them مِنof كُلِّevery فاكِهَةٍfruit

Those boughs bear, of every fruit,
a pair—how wondrous! Do moringa trees bear fruit?
فيin حُبِّlove for زَينَبَZaynab نَشكوwe lament حَرَّthe heat of أَدمُعِناour tears
فَهَلso, can ...? تُشَبُّbe kindled مِنَfrom الأَمواهِthe waters نيرانُfires
In loving Zaynab, we lament the heat of our tears.
Can fires, then, be kindled from water?
فَالحُسنُso beauty أَضحىhas become رَبيعاًspringtime وَهيَand she مَوسِمُهُits season
كَأَنَّهاas though she فيin شُهورِthe months of العامthe year نيسانُApril
So beauty has become springtime, and she its season,
as though, among the months of the year, she were April.

If you would counsel me in love, cease reproaching me.
Alas for the lover plagued by reproachers—may they be no more!
