وَصارِمٍ إِن هُزَّ في مَحفِلٍ

وَصارِمٍ إِن هُزَّ في مَحفِلٍ

قُطِّعَ بِالخُفِّ وَبِالنَّعلِ

قُطِّعَ بِالخُفِّ وَبِالنَّعلِ

And a keen sword, if brandished in a gathering,

When a sword is struck in an assembly

is cut to pieces with a boot and a sandal.

It is severed by the slipper and the sandal

قالَ أَنا العَبدِيُّ قُلنا أَجَل

قالَ أَنا العَبدِيُّ قُلنا أَجَل

ما لَكَ في الأَحرارِ مِن أَصلِ

ما لَكَ في الأَحرارِ مِن أَصلِ

He said, “I am al-ʿAbdī.” We said, “Indeed—

He said, I am an 'Abidi, we said yes

you have no ancestry among free men.”
