    فَجُنَّ القَلبُ مِن شَوقٍ وَأَنّا

    A little lightning flash gleamed at al-Ubayriq late at night;

So the heart went mad with longing and moaned.

It kept a lover sleepless and made tears flow,

And burned him and gladdened his eyelid.

And reminded us of a few nights gone by,

Made sweet by those who were there, and by us.

Nights when life's branch was tender,

And union's bough was green and swaying.

There, where we feared no watcher,

Nor mourned a beloved who had parted from us.

And I have a strange love poem about a gazelle,

A stranger, for whom I became Qays of Lubna.

And Time once was at peace with us, but now

Wages war on us, having turned its shield.

And surrendered us to a ruthless age,

Oppressive—so the envious satisfied their spite at our expense.
