    مِنهُ نِظامُ الرِياضِ مَحلولُ

    A breeze blew, drenched with dew;

by it, the gardens’ necklace was unstrung.

Its breath passed over their sweet basil,

    among the orchards, itself bedewed.

Gold dust and silver scatter together,

at its passing, with rubies and pearls.

And in the great trees, the branches bend,

so all of it acts and is acted upon.

And the fresh narcissus has a coquettish gaze,

    rimmed with saffron’s yellow.

And the violet’s figure has appeared in

a Yemeni mantle, and the mantle is honey-sweet.

And in the stock flowers’ palms, neatly arranged,

lies handiwork of every pleasing hue.

And the birds sing above the branches,

as though they were souls bereaved of children.

And from the plants, upon the moist earth were spread

    kerchiefs of every radiant bloom.

    And dawn’s Roman charged against

    night’s Zanj, his sword unsheathed.

Redness on the sword’s edges bore witness,

O friend, that the Zanj was slain.

He overtook him, riding before dawn

a noble steed with a white blaze and white stockings.

    فَهوَ قَتيلٌ لَم يُبكَ مَطلولُ

    Then he gave the sword mastery over his crown;

so he lies slain, unwept and unavenged.

So bring a brimming cup of wine,

as though it were a lamp in the darkness.

Its bubbles, against cares—should they visit

one who quaffs it—are birds in flocks,

fiercely pelting the heads of cares with

stones whose substance is baked clay.

So they lie slain by wine, and have

been likened to chaff that has been eaten.

Wine—joy has taken charge of its drinker,

so sorrow has departed, dismissed from office.
