Would that he who let darkness fall from his hair

would remove a veil from a face brighter than the full moon.

    A lad of fourteen—what a

moon that beauty has brought forth full!

He swayed his waist and unsheathed a glance—how

menacing the spear, and how keen a sword!

And the nectar of his mouth I have not won—

may God grant joy to arak and basham!

He found no target but my heart

when he nocked arrows fashioned from glances.

O reproacher, may you never incline toward

the words of one who chides and blames in matters of love.

No, by Him who made the fires of foes

coolness and safety for me through Ibrahim,

indeed, with Ibrahim, secure now is

everyone among us who has made his dwelling with him.

Pause awhile at his assembly, where hopes are set,

and call calamity a servant at his command.
