لِمَنْto whom أَشكُوI complain لِمَنْto whom والنَّاسُand the people سَمْحٌgenerous
فَقِيرٌpoor أَوْor غَنِىٌّrich غَيرُnot سَمْحِgenerous
To whom shall I complain—to whom—when people are either generous
To whom can I complain, to whom, when people are unkind?
And poor, or rich and ungenerous?
Whether poor or rich, they are unkind.
فَلَمْso did not أَبْلُغْI attain بِمَدْحِىthrough my praise رَأْسَthe principal of مَاليmy money
فَلَسْتُso I am not مُصَدِّعاًgiving a headache to رَأْسِيmy head بِمَدْحِwith praise
So I have not recouped my capital through my praise;
So I have not reached my goal with my praises,
So I will not give myself a headache with praise.
And I do not knock my head in praises.
