أَخذُواthey took بِأَطرافِwith the tips of الأَصابعِthe fingers حَاجتيmy request
أَخذُوا بِأَطرافِ الأَصابعِ حَاجتي
وكَذاand thus يكونُis تَهاونُthe indifference of الأَطْرافِlesser men (a play on 'extremities')
وكَذا يكونُ تَهاونُ الأَطْرافِ
They handled my request with their fingertips;
And such is the indifference of lesser men.
لَهْفيmy sorrow علَىfor القَومِthe people الكِرامِthe noble فَإنَّهُمْfor indeed they
لَهْفي علَى القَومِ الكِرامِ فَإنَّهُمْ
تَحْتَbeneath القُبورِthe graves جَواهِرُjewels of الأَصدافِthe shells
تَحْتَ القُبورِ جَواهِرُ الأَصدافِ
Alas for those noble folk, for they are
Beneath the graves, jewels within shells.
