دَعونِيَthey called me كُنَّson-in-law البيتِthe household ممَّاbecause of how closely لَزِمْتُهُI kept to it
دَعونِيَ كُنَّ البيتِ ممَّا لَزِمْتُهُ
وَإنْand although كانwas كُنَّson-in-law البيتِthe household عَنّيfrom me بِمَعْزَلِfar removed
وَإنْ كان كُنَّ البيتِ عَنّي بِمَعْزَلِ
They called me the household's son-in-law, so closely did I keep to it,
Let me be the house where I stayed
Though I was far from being the household's son-in-law.
Even if the house is far away from me
وَلَوand if كُنتُI were ذاpossessed of رُمْحِa spear لَعَاوَدْتُI would resume طَعْنَهُthrusting with it
وَلَو كُنتُ ذا رُمْحِ لَعَاوَدْتُ طَعْنَهُ
وَكَيفَand how بِعَوداتِwith repeated bouts الطِّعَانِof spear-thrusting لأَعْزَلِfor an unarmed man
وَكَيفَ بِعَوداتِ الطِّعَانِ لأَعْزَلِ
And had I a spear, I would thrust with it again—
If I had a spear, I would pierce it again
But how can an unarmed man thrust again and again?
But how can I, a broken spear, pierce again
