جَاءَappeared عِذارُcheek-down الذيthe one whom أَهِيمُI love madly بهِwith him
فَجدَّدَand renewed الوَجْدَlonging أيَّwhat a تَجدِيدِrenewal
The cheek-down of the one I love madly appeared,
The one for whom I pine came to me,
and renewed my longing—what a renewal!
Renewing passion with such novelty!
وَظَنَّهُand he thought it آخِرَthe end of الغَرامِpassion بهِfor him
مُفَنِّدٌa reprover جَاهِلٌignorant بِمَقْصُودِيof my intent
And it was deemed the end of my passion for him
And he thought it was the first wild love for him,
by a reprover ignorant of my intent.
Though ignorant was he of my true aim.
وَمَاand not دَرَىhe knew أَنَّthat لامَthe lām (Arabic letter) عارضهِhis cheek
لامُa lām ابتِداءٍbeginning ولامُand a lām تَوْكِيدِemphasis
And he did not know that the lām-shaped down on his cheek
He knew not that his "no" to me
is a lām of beginning and a lām of emphasis.
Was but emphasis, not a fresh refrain.
