قَالَتْ وَقَد هَاجَرْتُها

قَالَتْ وَقَد هَاجَرْتُها

في الصَّوْمِ أُفِّ عَليكَ بَعْلا

في الصَّوْمِ أُفِّ عَليكَ بَعْلا

She said, when I had shunned her

She said, and she had spurned me,

during the fast: “Fie on you as a husband!

“In fasting, treat me tenderly, my husband.”

كانتْ عليكَ وَظِيفَةٌ

كانتْ عليكَ وَظِيفَةٌ

صَيَّرْتَها في الصَّوْمِ بَقْلا

صَيَّرْتَها في الصَّوْمِ بَقْلا

You had a duty;

Yours was a duty,

you turned it into greens during the fast.”

You made it in fasting mere greens.

فَأَجبتُها ذاكَ المُدَلَّلُ

فَأَجبتُها ذاكَ المُدَلَّلُ

صَارَ مَنكُوساً مُدلّى

صَارَ مَنكُوساً مُدلّى

So I answered her: “That pampered one

So I answered that spoiled one,

has become downturned and dangling.

Who had become downcast and compliant,

وَعَهِدْتُهُ رُمْحاً أَش

وَعَهِدْتُهُ رُمْحاً أَش

قُّ بهِ الدُّروعَ فَصَارَ حَبْلا

قُّ بهِ الدُّروعَ فَصَارَ حَبْلا

And I had known it as a spear—I would pierce

“I knew him as a spear most sharp

coats of armor with it, but it has become a rope.”

That pierced armor, and he's become a rope.”
