نَظَرَتْ مِن خَلَلِ السَّجْ

نَظَرَتْ مِن خَلَلِ السَّجْ

فِ كَشَمْسٍ مِن دُجُونِ

فِ كَشَمْسٍ مِن دُجُونِ

She looked through the gaps in the curtain,

like a sun out of darkness.

فَرَنَتْ لي بِفُتورٍ

فَرَنَتْ لي بِفُتورٍ

وَرَمَتْني بِفُتونِ

وَرَمَتْني بِفُتونِ

Then she gazed at me languidly,

and struck me with enchantment.

وَعَلَينا رُقَباءٌ

وَعَلَينا رُقَباءٌ

هَجروا نَومَ العُيُونِ

هَجروا نَومَ العُيُونِ

And there were watchers over us,

who had forsaken the sleep of their eyes.

فَتَطارَحْنا هَوانا

فَتَطارَحْنا هَوانا

بِرِسالات الجفونِ

بِرِسالات الجفونِ

So we exchanged our love

through messages of the eyelids.

وَزنَينا بِعُيونٍ

وَزنَينا بِعُيونٍ

وَرُجِمْنا بِظُنونِ

وَرُجِمْنا بِظُنونِ

And we committed adultery with our eyes,

and were stoned with suspicions.
