أَيُّهاO you السَّائِلُthe inquirer عَنّيabout me إنَّنيindeed I
أَيُّها السَّائِلُ عَنّي إنَّني
قَدindeed تَحامىkept away الجُودgenerosity عَنّيfrom me واعتَصَمْand took refuge
قَد تَحامى الجُود عَنّي واعتَصَمْ
O you who ask about me—indeed,
You who ask about me, I am one
Generosity has shunned me and taken refuge.
Whose generosity has fled, who's become withdrawn,
عَزَّwas hard to find مَنsomeone أَمدحُهُI praise him فيin رَجبٍRajab
عَزَّ مَن أَمدحُهُ في رَجبٍ
فَأَناso I الأَخْرَسُthe mute one والشَّهْرُand the month الأَصَمْthe deaf one
فَأَنا الأَخْرَسُ والشَّهْرُ الأَصَمْ
Someone I can praise in Rajab is hard to find,
He whom I praise in Rajab is now too proud
So I am mute, and the month is deaf.
So I stay mute, and the month passes unsung.
