يَاO لَحْظَهُhis glance أَثْخَنْتَyou grievously wounded قَلْبيmy heart جِراحْwith wounds
كأَنَّas though قَتْلِيkilling me لَكfor you أَمْرٌa matter مُباحْlawful
O his glance—you have dealt my heart wound upon wound!
O his glance, you have grievously wounded my heart,
As though I had slain some man of yours whose blood was fair game.
as though killing me were lawful for you.
يَاO مُهَجَhearts العُشَّاقِof the lovers مَاذاwhat جَنَتْhave committed
عَليكِagainst you فيin الحُبِّlove عُيُونُeyes المِلاحْof the fair
O lifeblood of lovers, what wrong have
O lovers' hearts, what wrong have they done
the eyes of beauties ever done you in love?
to you in love, those eyes of the fair?
غَرتْكِbeguiled you مِنfrom أَجْفانِهاtheir eyelids فَتْرَةٌa languor
وَكَيْفَand how يُغَتَرُّis one beguiled بِلِينِby the smoothness of الصِّفاحْthe sword blades
Did the languor in their eyelids beguile you?
A languor in their eyelids beguiled you—
But how can one be beguiled by the softness of sword blades?
and how can one be beguiled by the smoothness of blades?
أَمَاis there not علَىupon أَلحاظِglances مِنbecause of قَتْلِناkilling us
مِنany قَوَدٍretribution for killing أَوْor حَرَجٍblame أَوْor جُناحْsin
Do glances, for killing us, incur no
Are glances, for killing us, not subject
blood-requital, reproach, or sin?
to blood-retribution, or blame, or sin?
لاقَىhe met الدُّجَىthe night's darkness مِنfrom شَعْرِهِhis hair بالدُّجَىwith darkness
والصُّبْحَand the dawn مِنfrom طَلْعَتهِhis countenance بِالصَّباحْwith morning light
He met the night with night drawn from his hair,
He met the night's darkness with darkness from his hair,
and dawn with morning drawn from his face.
and dawn with morning light from his countenance.
وَزَارَand he visited وَالنَّجْمُwhile the star قَصِيرُshort الخُطَىof stride
فيin السَّيْرِits course والنَّسْرُand the Eagle مَهِيضُbroken الجَناحْof wing
He came to visit while the star moved in tiny steps
And he visited while the star was short of stride
on its course, and the Eagle was broken-winged.
in its course, and the Eagle's wing was broken.
