وَلَمْand did not يَزَلcease مَشْرِقاًradiant بِالبِشْرِwith cheerfulness أوor غرَبَاhe set
Nobility weeps for a sun that dispelled so many sorrows.
The dignity cries for a sun that has set after shining bright,
And he remained radiant with cheer, even as he set.
Yet it remains shining in good news or has set in the west,
وَقدْand indeed بَكَيْناwe wept دَماًblood نُبْدِيwe reveal بهِthrough it شَنَقاًyearning
بَعْدَafter الغرُوبِsunset فَنَاعيso the death-announcer الشَّمْسِthe sun ماdid not كَذَبَاlie
And we have wept blood, revealing our yearning through it,
And we have cried blood with which we show a hanging robe,
after sunset; the herald of the sun's death did not lie.
After sunset, so we call to the sun that has not lied,
وَعُمْرُand the lifespan of نُوحٍNoah وَعُمْرُand the lifespan of الطِّفْلِthe child غَايتُهُits ultimate limit
إلىto نتِهاءٍan end فَدَعْso put aside عَنfrom نَفسِكَyourself التَّعَبَاthe weariness
And Noah's lifespan and a child's have the same destination:
And the life of Noah and the life of a child, its end
an end; so spare yourself the weariness.
To an outcome, so leave off from yourself fatigue,
وَقَدْand indeed كَفَانَاsufficed for us بِشَمْسٍthrough Shams (sun) الدِّينِal-Din (the faith) مَوْعظَةًan admonition
لَوْif only كانَwere يتَّعِظُtaking heed البَاقيthe one who remains بِمَنfrom those who ذَهَبَاhave departed
And Shams al-Din has been admonition enough for us,
And the sun of religion has sufficed us with advice,
if only those who remain took heed of those who have gone.
If only those remaining would take advice from those gone.
